Thanksgiving and Black Friday are a mere few weeks away, the busy season for our retailers. As a reminder, we are closed on Thanksgiving.

Windows 8
We have had questions about the new versions of Microsoft Windows, and about the new tablets running this product, and whether we are compatible.
There are multiple versions of Windows 8, some of which will be able to run ExtremePOS®, Musicware, or Praiz, and some of which will not. The version currently being issued on the Surface tablet, and some other devices, called Windows RT is not able to run ExtremePOS®, or any other program built for previous versions of Windows.
However, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro both can run our software. We recommend Windows 8 Pro if you are going to purchase one of these.
For the immediate future, until there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, we will be continuing to include Windows 7 on PCs purchased from us, and it will be our recommended OS. However, Version 3.0 of ExtremePOS® is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8.

Holiday Projections
The National Retail Foundation has released their holiday sales forecast for the year. It is available at their website and projects for a 4% increase over last year, continuing solid growth after last year increased 3.2% over 2010.
Among other things, the NRF suggests that gift cards will continue to grow in popularity. If you are not offering gift cards currently, or need them reprinted, there is still time to get them made before Black Friday, but contact us as soon as possible.

Integrated Credit Card Processing
For customers looking for a way to speed up transactions this holiday season who are currently using separate terminals, consider switching to integrated credit card processing using ExtremePOS® Payment.
If you use Mercury Payment Systems, integrated processing can be done with no charge from us. If you're using another processor, call them and ask if they are compatible with the NetEPay solution from DataCapSystems. If they are, as many major processors are, you will be able to integrate with the purchase of this software.

Antivirus Programs
We have had a few customers with issues with viruses of late. Of course, the most important thing you can do to avoid viruses on your point of sale computers is to not use them for anything other than for business purposes. However, a good antivirus program can help.
Generally, we preload computers we are shipping out to customers with the free Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a basic but good low-resource antivirus. While we have not used every pay service out there, one which we can state works well in terms of not causing our programs to malfunction is Norton Antivirus. This comes in a variety of versions, with different features, which you can select depending upon your needs.

For customers on an update plan, the most recent version of the software is 3.00.0005. We will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd in honor of Thanksgiving.
