Saints and Thanksgiving

Jan Muller

Who are those behind-the-scenes saints that make things oh-so-much better for you? On All Saints Day, LSTC got to say thank you to one of its behind-the-scenes saints. Her name is Saint Janette. She and her husband, Saint Ernie, have been supporting LSTC students in myriad ways for over 30 years.

Janette Muller's connection to LSTC goes back to her father, an Augustana Seminary grad. She learned about service and thanksgiving from him and from other mentors. Jan's and Ernie's giving began modestly and grew to service on LSTC's Board of Directors and the Foundation Board. Jan has been serving continuously on one or the other board since 1984.

She and Ernie understand the value of an endowment to provide long-term support for an organization. Twenty-seven years ago, Jan helped create the LSTC Foundation to establish and grow an unrestricted endowment fund. Starting from zero, it is now worth over $22 million.

Jan has led the Foundation Board since its first meeting in 1991. Now she has decided that it is time to let someone else have a chance to lead that group. She didn't want any fuss or any speeches, but LSTC  needed to say thank you. Her response to the brief tribute at a dinner in her honor was to ask those present to support LSTC. She said, "The ELCA needs LSTC."

Jan has assured us that she and Ernie will continue to come to all of the major events at LSTC. Meanwhile, they will keep witnessing to the good news of Jesus Christ in dozens of other ways, including a prison ministry and in service to their congregation in Moose Lake, Minn.

Thank you, Saint Janette (and Saint Ernie), for leading, for leading by example, and for your incredible generosity of the time, talent, and treasure that God has entrusted to you.

Blessings,

Jan Boden

How the work of the church has changed

Art Miller

Pastor Art Miller

Joyful Beginnings Lutheran Church

Tyler, Texas

Having been in ministry 60 years, I am now attempting to start a mission congregation in Tyler, Texas. The work of the pastor has changed drastically. The pastoral purpose in my ministry has been twofold: to nourish the members of the church and to share the good news of the Gospel with others.

I have gone through five building programs during my ministry. Two were in a Kansas City suburb, Raytown, Mo.; one was in Loveland, Colo.; and two were in Pueblo, Colo.

The method to reach others has changed drastically. During the first half of my ministry, it was relatively easy to reach persons who were not members of a congregation. One could canvass an area, advertise in the local newspaper, and the message could be shared rather easily. Today, our culture has drastically changed people's needs and desires. Read more.

Annual Fund Love

You've heard this before, but we just can't say it often enough: if you want to do a lot of good for LSTC, make a gift to the Annual Fund. It's the amazing fund that does it all: it funds faculty and staff positions, it provides grants to students in need, and it pays those ever-present utility bills. Your gifts to the Annual Fund have a huge and direct benefit for every student, faculty and staff member at LSTC.

What's more, through June 2014, your Annual Fund gift could qualify to be matched by a generous anonymous donor. Find out how and make a gift here.

Thank you!
