NASCAR Driver David Starr speaks to students at Buckner's Steel Day
Buckner Steel Day Draws More than 250 Students, Teachers
Buckner Companies, Graham, N.C., hosted more than 250 students, teachers and steel industry stakeholders at its company headquarters on September 19, 2014--which is more than double that attended in 2013. 

Each year the American Institute of Steel Construction sponsors Steel Day, which is hosted by its members and partners nationwide. Buckner's open house is designed to show how area high schools and universities how structural steel contributes to building America. More

Labor and Employment Best Practices
Perry Safran and Ashley Felton of Safran Law Offices, a full-service firm in Raleigh, N.C., will address the SEAA Convention on employment issues affecting construction. Proper employment

policies are key to a healthy and thriving business. Trending now is the Obama Administration's desire to revise labor and employment legislation on everything from over-time to misclassification, and discrimination. Safran and Felton will suggest how HR Best Practices can protect your company from litigation and employment claims.

Felton is a 2013 graduate of Campbell Law School. She gained experience in the public sector working on Disability Rights North Carolina. She currently focuses on labor and employment matters, ranging from Form I-9 audits to employment disputes.

Safran is one the North Carolina's leading construction law attorneys and founder of Safran Law Offices. Before beginning his law practice in 1981, Safran worked as a construction project manager for 10 years. Recently, Safran worked with construction industry stakeholders on legislative drafting projects. He is a registered arbitrator with the American Arbitration  Association and previously served on Raleigh's City Council. A long-standing member of Centennial Authority, he has played a key role in the construction and continued maintenance of the PNC Arena.
Prevention through Design: Making Steel more Socially Sustainable
Dr. Michael Toole, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University, will discuss designing for construction safety and how this is important to your customers. He'll share common examples of Prevention through Design (PtD) and tools and contracts that enable it. Attendees will learn three sets of organizational actions necessary to implement PtD.

Dr. Toole is a professional civil engineer and a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers. He  has 15 years of experience with a forensics engineering firm, a large homebuilder, the U.S. Navy Civil Engineers Corps, and three startup firms. He has served as the Vice Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers Construction Institute Prevention through Design Committee and the Site Safety Committee.

New OSHA Reporting Requirements Start January 1

Beginning January 1, 2015, there will be a change to what covered employers are required to report to OSHA. Read OSHA's announcement here. Employers will be required to report all work-related fatalities within 8 hours and all in-patient hospitalizations, amputations, and losses of an eye within 24 hours of finding out about the incident.  More

IPAF Explains Aerial Work Platform Standard Revisions
ANSI A92.3-2006, A92.5-2006 and A92.6-2006 have been reaffirmed in 2014 with the anticipation of new standards taking their place in the future. Reaffirming in effect is a statement that the standards are released with a new date (-2014R) unchanged from the prior publication.

New replacement standards in both the United States (ANSI/SAIA A92) and Canada (B354) are underway. In summary, all aerial work platforms with the noted exception of vehicle mounted will no longer have a product-specific standard and will all be covered by a design (A92.20/B354.7), safe-use (A92.22/B354.8) and training standard (A92.24/B354.9). More
