2013 Steel Erection Projects of the Year Winners Named

Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) announces the winners of its annual Project of the Year competition. Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges. Four companies were recognized in 2013.

 

"Since the contest's inception more than 10 years ago, SEAA has recognized complex and unique steel erection projects throughout the world. Past projects demonstrated successful completion while overcoming unusual conditions, tight time constraints, or other challenges. The 2013 winners reflect the importance of safety while sticking to the job's schedule," said Tom Underhill, Executive Director.  More

 

Three Named to SEAA Board of Directors

The Board of Directors for the Steel Erectors Association of America has named three new individuals to open and newly vacated positions, reported Steve Burkholder, President. They are Dave Brown, Jim Simonson, and Robert Echols.  More

Two Companies Approved as SEAA Ironworker Training, Testing Centers

S&R Enterprises LLC and Cooper Steel have been approved as NCCER Training Units and Authorized Assessment Sites for the SEAA's Ironworker Craft Training program, reports the Steel Erectors Association of America. The initiative is intended to expand the availability of ironworker training across the United States.

 

"You just can't go wrong investing in training," said Duff Zimmerman, Vice President and COO of Cooper Steel, Shelbyville, Tenn.

 

"The goal of this program is to train and retain a good pool of crafts people and managers," said Mark Yerke, Vice President of Construction, S&R Enterprises, Harrisburg, Pa. More

Buckner Companies, Graham, N.C., is targeting high school, community college, technical school, and university students. Activities will demonstrate the importance of craft training and the many career opportunities available in the steel industry. "Our intention is to have representatives from SEAA, NCCER, and AISC participating," said Eddie Williams, Buckner Chairman of the Board. "NASCAR driver David Starr and spokesperson for NCCER, will talk about vocational and craft training in his career." Last year 110 students participated in Buckner's Steel Day. The company hopes to double participation this year.

LPR and Bolt Council Demo Drop Test

During OSHA's Stand Down to Prevent Falls, LPR Construction, Loveland, Colo., and the Research Council on Structural Connections demonstrated the effects of fall using dummies at LPR's training facility. The drop test was shown to about 50 company representatives.

SEAA Members Join Stand-Down to Prevent Falls

Several SEAA members ordered Stand Down to Prevent Falls posters for use in company stand-down activities. According to OSHA, more than 1 million workers in 25,000 workplaces across the country participated in stand down events to discuss fall prevention in construction during the first week of June 2014. Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, provided this recap.

Amendments to Cranes & Derricks regulation

The Federal Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs has set a July target date to make amendments to 1926 Subpart CC Cranes & Derricks in Construction. In addition, there are two new letters of interpretation dealing with riggers, both published earlier this year. More
