Massive Credit Card Fraud Uncovered
The U.S. Department of Justice recently brought charges against 18 individuals allegedly involved in a massive international credit card fraud scheme. More than $200 million in losses have been confirmed so far, but due to the scope of the fraud - which involved more than 25,000 fraudulently obtained credit cards - the final loss tally may be even higher.
The scheme was apparently rather simple. The individuals created thousands of fake identities, built up bogus credit histories on these fake identities, and then used the identities to obtain credit cards, which they used to purchase luxury automobiles, electronics, spa treatments, high-end clothing and millions of dollars in gold and cash.
