University College at Ellsworth held Storytelling event at Woodlawn
Authors, Daniel Mahoney, Sanford Phippen, Rich Lamasney

In June, the University College at Ellsworth (UCE) held its premier book reading and storytelling event with three of its local faculty authors: Dan Mahoney, Sanford Phippen, and Richard Lamasney.

According to Lynne Witham, UCE Director, "We had 20-25 audience members, and the Sleigh Barn at Woodlawn was the perfect venue to provide a comfortable and personal experience for both the authors and the audience." For information on renting the Sleigh Barn for your upcoming event, click here.

Machias Senior College Visited for

Tea and a Tour in June

When Ruth Thurston from the Sunrise Senior College in Machias called us back in January to see if we could accommodate their group for tour and tea in June, we responded with a hardy, "Absolutely!"

What fun we had with the 24 senior college students from Washington
County.  For many of the students, it was the first time they had visited Woodlawn. Executive director, Joshua Torrance, presented the history of the estate and the Black family as the group enjoyed the magnificent view from the front porch.  A tour through the mansion followed by tea and cookies elegantly served in the Sleigh Barn completed their visit.

Axel and Irma Eliason

In July and August, we offer Tea Time Tours on Wednesday afternoons starting at 3 p.m.  We are often asked when the tradition of serving afternoon tea began.

While the original owner, John Black was an Englishman and likely enjoyed a cup of tea, it was the last caretakers at Woodlawn that established the ritual of tea time in the 1930's.

Irma Eliason and her husband Axel were hired by Nixon Black as year round car

e takers in 1919.  While they were paid well for their work and had a comfortable home in the wooden Ell of the Black House, it is believed Mrs. Eliason established tea time to supplement their income. She was known to bake some of the best cookies in town and she enjoyed taking folks on tour of the Black House and sharing her memories of the Black family.  In the summer of 2015, Mrs. Eliason's style of tea time tours returned, much to the delight of our summer guests.  Space is limited for these unique staff led tours and tea.  Reserve your ticket today for your Tea Time Tour at Woodlawn.
