Greetings!
Exploring and tracking indicators of well-being within the community has been at the core of SCOPE's mission since our founding. By publishing periodic data-rich Community Report Cards, SCOPE has provided a backdrop for understanding the various aspects of Sarasota's challenges and accomplishments. Much like the dashboard in a car, the measures of well-being expressed in such reports provide a sense of where we are going, what progress we are making, and how well our community is functioning. Like the health of an individual, the health of the community has its own ups and downs. As trends shed light on the well-being of the community, they also reflect the well-being of the people within the community. This connection between individual health and community health has been a part of our nation's ethic since the founding fathers rallied around the words "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" as the three essential pillars of human rights. While scholars debate who was the first to use the phrase, most agree that these words within our nation's Declaration of Independence express not just the rights of the individual - but a shared obligation to help achieve these ideals for everyone. So how is Sarasota doing in the realm of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, and do we have the measures in place to really know? How do we know that the facts and figures that are routinely gathered and reported are the best ones to help us monitor the life, liberty and happiness of our community? Soon we will be launching a new community video campaign - "Happiness Matters". Picking up where last year's Life is Good videos left off, the Happiness Matters campaign will provide a platform to capture what qualities of life are important to individuals and the community. Only through engagement can we determine the measures that matter most to the community.

Happiness Matters | Here at SCOPE, our mission is to connect and inspire citizens to create a better community. Why do we do this? One reason is, happiness matters. Happiness tells us a great deal about our community's strengths which concurrently helps us understand weaknesses as well. It matters at an individual level and at a community level. If you looked around a happy community, what would it look like? Do you think that Sarasota County is a happy county? Read more on our blog.
