Greetings!
As Chair of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that SCOPE has appointed John McCarthy as SCOPE's Interim Director. Following a 30 year career with Sarasota County Government, John came to SCOPE in August to serve as a member of the SCOPE transition team. Known for his tremendous knowledge of this region's history, and a decade of leadership with Parks and Recreation, John has a deep appreciation and passion for the people and communities within Sarasota County. John's responsibilities will include the oversight of SCOPE's operations with emphasis on community data, community engagement and community partner development.

The Giving Partner Challenge |
Since 2001, Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence (SC0PE) has played an essential role in the well-being of our community. Envisioned as a community think-tank to blend community data with citizen engagement, SCOPE has inspired tremendous positive change in the community. From study groups to community report cards to citizen-leader development, SCOPE has helped inspire our community to openly plan for excellence. Along the way, a number of initiatives have been born, reinforcing the power of blending expert knowledge with community engagement to create inspired opportunities for community greatness. Now, SCOPE needs your help! If you believe in using community data to better understand our citizen's lives, if you believe in community engagement as a way to share talents and solutions and if you believe that, as partners, we can build a better Sarasota, then this is your time to act. Through your support, SCOPE can activate our essential mission of openly planning for community excellence throughout Sarasota County. SCOPE is proud to participate in the anxiously awaited Giving Partner 36-Hour Giving Challenge presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Your donation to SCOPE during the 36-hour Giving Challenge will support our continued ability to harness the power of community data and active community engagement. This year's challenge begins on March 5th at 7am with the theme "Unleash Your Inner Generosity" to invite all of us to support the organizations that make Sarasota great. If you believe in the power of community data and community engagement, this is your chance to help support the work of SCOPE in the community.

Meet SCOPE's New Intern Catherine Wolfe |
Hello! My name is Catherine Wolfe and I am the new Community Data Intern at SCOPE. I am very excited to be here and am looking forward to getting to know everyone involved with the organization. I am a 20-year-old college student attending New College of Florida as a third year Sociology/Psychology student. SCOPE is known for its mission of connecting and inspiring citizens to create a better community and this mission is what brought me to the organization. I study neighborhoods and perceptions of crime with the goal of understanding how neighborhoods can deter and rehabilitate crime. SCOPE has the same focus that I do: provide information to the community, identify issues, and propose solutions. My interest in my community and the desire to take an active role in shaping it has brought me to SCOPE.
I'm looking forward to working on the Community Data Initiative and contributing to this wonderful organization and Sarasota County. Thank you so much for having me! |
Data Byte: Our Built Environment |

Good news for homeowners across the United States this week: housing prices were up almost everywhere in 2012. How do home prices in Sarasota County compare to rising housing prices around the country and to other counties in Florida? What does our local data show, and where might you be able to find out more about the Sarasota County real estate market? Zillow.com and Trulia.com are two "real time" sources of local data on real estate and homes for sale. Read more on our blog. |
