Yazmín
She was one of the first performers ever to appear on the Rookery's outdoor stage. Hard to believe that was three summers ago already! The year we initially experimented with bringing live outdoor music to Cable. We pretty much were flying by the seat of our pants back then, typically scheduling music just a week or two in advance, if and when we could find someone willing to play.
Yazmín was willing. And people loved her. So even as our outdoor music series has become better organized over these past three years...and grown in stature to the point musicians are now contacting us to inquire about performing here...we've always saved at least one date each summer to welcome Yazmín back to the Rookery stage. And this, lucky fans, happens to be that weekend.
Singer/songwriter Yazmín is a native of Washburn who first performed publicly at the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua at the tender age of three. A decade and a half later she won first place at the Chautauqua "Songwriter of the Year Competition." Since then she has opened at the Big Top for the likes of Nancy Griffith and Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know live broadcast. After hearing Yazmín perform from backstage, Nancy Griffith exclaimed:
"How brilliant is she? I was just transported to another place. What a voice, what a keyboard player, just absolutely extraordinary."
Yazmín performs many of her own original Indie, folk, and pop compositions. Her songs draw from deep musical wells that span Caribbean rhythms and ancient Celtic melodies. Blending and mixing in perfect proportions, she crosses traditional boundaries into new landscapes, taking us all along for a ride we won't soon forget.
Yazmín. Back again at the Rookery this Sunday. As usual our patio grill fires up at 1:30 and the music begins at 2. All seating is first come, first served. So get here early or you might want to bring along some chairs.
