Outdoor Live Music Returns to the Rookery

It's finally beginning to feel as though summer may make an appearance in northern Wisconsin this year after all. But isn't it interesting that even though the trees budded and spring flowers bloomed later than normal this delayed spring, the ticks and gnats seemed to be right on schedule.

Speaking of remaining on schedule, here at the Rookery as well the show WILL go on. Meaning Summer Sunday Serenades, our second full season of live outdoor music performances. In fact, our new tent arrived just yesterday. You remember. The tent needed to replace the one that collapsed under the weight of a freak mid-September snowfall last year.

Considering that we had the largest May snowfall on record earlier this month that apparently means we now get just three full snowless months these days here in the great Northwoods. We're darn sure gonna make the most of it! In part by bringing you another awesome lineup of live music to the Rookery's outdoor stage.

Summer Sunday Seranades

And who better to kick things off on Sunday, June 16 (Father's Day) than Molly and the Danger Band? Everyone's favorite local band, Molly and the boys will bookend our outdoor music season this year, returning at the end of September to help wrap things up once again.

In between we have lots of other great music coming your way. Many of your favorite performers are back from last summer. Two will even pair up when Ms. Molly joins jazz singer Stacy Hughes for several new duo performances. Plus we're also welcoming some all-new bands to the Rookery stage this summer, performing everything from Celtic to bluegrass to rootsy folk-rock. Heck, we've even got the rockin' rhythm & blues band that won Famous Dave's Battle of the Bands competition in the Twin Cities earlier this year!

In all we'll be featuring live outdoor music on 16 consecutive Sunday afternoons from 2-5 PM. Click HERE to view the Rookery's entire summer music calendar.

And remember, you can enjoy the great music each Sunday afternoon while savoring the wafting aromas and amazing flavors of the Rookery's special patio grill menu. Chef Jenny will be taking over the grill this summer and she has some delectable new dishes planned. Including a quinoa walnut veggie burger that I had the opportunity to sample for the first time just last evening. Yum! Stay tuned for the unveiling of this summer's entire patio grill menu coming next week.

Another Promising Sign of Summer

Fresh Veggie Delivery Begins in Two Weeks

If you've already signed up for the full season farm share program offered by our partner, DragSmith Farms, then mark your calendar for Thursday, June 13. That's the day your first weekly box of tasty and nutritious organic vegetables will arrive. You can stop by the Rookery to fetch your fresh veggies anytime after 4 PM each Thursday all summer long. Or we'll keep them for you in our walk-in cooler to be picked up anytime we're open over the next several days.

And if you HAVEN'T yet signed up for this fabulous opportunity now is the time. Ask anyone who participated last year and you're sure to hear glowing reviews.

Each time you open your box of freshly picked produce the wonders of sight and smell will greet your senses. The royal colors of an heirloom tomato or the robust earthy smell of carrots greet  you like a warm summer breeze. Family owned for 115 years, DragSmith's entire 104 acres is certified organic. They choose varieties of vegetables that taste good and pair them with growing methods that encourage flavor. Nothing inspires creativity in the kitchen like receiving a box overflowing with freshly picked vegetables. Each week you'll typically receive 6-8 different types, along with menu ideas that are especially helpful for preparing and serving the occasional unique vegetable you may never have tried before.

And not only that. The program also happens to be a terrific bargain. A half bushel of fresh garden produce each week for 22 weeks (June 10-Nov 4) for only $390, delivered to the Rookery for pickup anytime after 4 PM on Thursdays. That's less than $18 per week. Do you have any idea what it would cost to purchase that much organic produce at your local food cooperative or grocery store?

But what if you're mostly here in Cable only during our peak summer season? Once again this year DragSmith has agreed to offer our loyal Rookery guests a special "vacation package" farm share: 9 weeks (July 1-Aug 26) for just $225.

To sign up for either program simply stop by the Rookery or mail your check to DragSmith Farms, 1346 16 1/2 Avenue, Barron, WI 54812. Be sure to include your name, mailing address, phone, and email. You'll also want to be sure to specify the Rookery as your pickup site. We guarantee you're gonna love it!
