This is my first newsletter as Director of Development and Communications and I'm very much hoping that St. Paul's words: "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit" (1 Cor 12:4) are going to come true. Our sisters are so grateful for all that Sister Gen Maiers has done in her 20 years in this position. She has brought her own unique gifts to the role and I, for one, am so happy to inherit the many friends she has made for our monastery during those years. I'm conscious that I will bring a different set of gifts to this work, but I hope that I, too, can be open to the Spirit's guidance, sharing our Benedictine spirituality and values with the wider world.

Maybe you'd like to know a little bit about me? If you could hear me speak, you'd realize I'm not from the local area. I come from a bit further east--England! In my home there is a city called Manchester which is about 200 miles north-west of London. I first visited the monastery for two weeks in 2005 as scholar on our Studium program. I had no intention of joining this, or any other, monastery! However, on a second, longer visit to Studium in 2006, I realized that I was called to monastic life. I entered the monastery in 2007, made first monastic profession in 2009 and perpetual profession in 2012.

Many sisters will tell you that living in a monastic community enables you to develop gifts and talents you never knew you had. That's certainly been true for me! I've studied philosophy, theology and nursing and had worked as a nurse and healthcare researcher for about 25 years before I became a sister. Since I entered the monastery, I initially worked as part of the housekeeping team which is headed by Sister Marcella Weber. I loved that experience. After I made first profession, I began working in development and, after making perpetual profession, I became Director of Communications. It's certainly been an opportunity to learn on the job! I'm apprehensive about this new move which combines responsibility for development and communications, but I'm also excited. Usually, in these letters, we focus on the fact that we are praying for you but, on this occasion, I'd like to ask for your prayers for me and my team as we make this transition.

You maybe already know that I'm not a stranger to the newsletter. For the past three and a half years, I've been responsible for the news items that we feature below. Now, I've swapped my role and I'm writing the "letter" part which S. Gen always did. My former
S. Tammy Shoemaker
role has been taken on by Sister Tammy Shoemaker who made her first monastic profession last summer and has been working with us since October. We both hope that you'll continue to read Musings. We're certainly enjoying the opportunity to work on it and keep you up to date with what's happening at the  monastery.

Finally, I'd like to say a sincere "thank you" for the support you've given us over the years. It is a joy to know that you want to remain connected and I hope that will continue to be the case. Thank you!

Sabbath Rest: Reflections from Scripture and the Rule of Benedict
S. Ephrem Hollermann, OSB
(Photo by S. Karen Streveler, OSB)
On Sunday, January 17, Sister Ephrem Hollermann, OSB, presented to our oblates. We live in a society of unceasing activity. Consciously or unconsciously people live to achieve, accomplish, perform and possess. Dare we break the cycle of restless activity and achievement in order to center on what is truly  important--God, other people and all of life?
S. Ephrem focused her reflections on Sabbath rest as restorative for human beings and for society as a whole. Our next Oblate Sunday will be held on March 20, 2016 by S. Josue Behnen on The Monastic Way of Conversatio, Part II: what can we learn from ancient monastics.

Benedictine Friends

Why would more than 150 first year women at the College of Saint Benedict immediately sign up for the Benedictine Friends program when they arrived in August? Some answers include: "I really wanted to get to know a sister" or "my sister and some of her friends told me that I had to join it or I'd be sorry." Others heard it really was a fun program and so many of their friends were joining.

This month, these same first year students and many upper class students poured into the monastery dining room at 6:45 one evening to enjoy an hour of FUN and GAMES. Laughter could be heard as friends enjoyed snacks, played a variety of games or just caught up with each other. Before they knew, it was time to hug each other good-bye and leave with big smiles and a copy of With Lamps Burning, Sister Grace McDonald's history of our monastery and college. Some set up times to meet for a one-to-one visit; others promised they'd meet for the next program: "Leaping into Your Future" on February 29.

Lent
The official Liturgical Christmas season ended on January 10 with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. And so it is hard to believe that there is just one month of Ordinary Time before Lent will officially begin on February 10 with Ash Wednesday. Our community will celebrate by distributing ashes to one another and our guests.

You are invited to join us on Ash Wednesday and for other services throughout Lent. Please check our Web site for more information.

Spirituality Center
Pope Francis has written, "The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel" (The Joy of the Gospel, p.114).

S. Josue Behnen, OSB, and S. Kathryn Casper, OSB, gave a retreat, Mercy: The Beating Heart of the Gospel, at our Spirituality Center on Wednesday, January 13. Each of us is called to be a place not of judgement, but of compassion. Scripture passages and other sources were used to explore images of mercy. There was time for quiet reflection and prayer.

Our Spirituality Center offers many opportunities for quiet time, prayer and reflection or study time. For more wonderful opportunities, click here.

Celebrating Retirement with Sister Gen and Sister Lois
(l. to r.): Ss. Gen Maiers; Michaela Hedican, our prioress and Lois Wedl(Photo by S. Karen Streveler)
On Saturday, January 23, we honored two very special sisters at a community gathering. S. Gen Maiers was thanked for her 20 years of friend raising, and fund raising as Director of Development. She's helped us to understand how important it is to keep in mind our mission and how essential it is to have others share in our living out that mission. S. Gen is the original GIVE TO THE MAX sister and we bless her for  her dedication and commitment.

S. Lois Wedl answered the call to be Vocation Director six years ago. Being an avid supporter of our College of Saint Benedict Blazer teams (and inducted into the Hall of Fame for being such), she also lead the vocation team in being with those who "came to see" our monastery as a potential member. We ask God to bless both of these amazing women through this tender time of transition.

Annual Mardi Gras Celebration
(l. to r.): Ss. Marlene Schwinghammer, sub-prioress; Jean Juenemann; Michaela Hedican, our prioress; Dorothy Manuel; Ardella Kvamme and Kerry O' Reilly
Some of our sisters (picture right) attended the annual
Catholic Charities Mardi Gras celebration on Saturday,
January 23, 2016 to benefit the Catholic Charities
Emergency Services and Catholic Charities Domus
Transitional Housing. Both charities help the marginalized
  in our community.

I'm keeping pretty much the words S. Gen has always used to end this letter because they express exactly what I want to say: Thank you again for sharing your time, talent and treasure with us as we respond to the needs of the world. Your partnership is vital to us as we strive to bring a ray of hope to a dark world.

If you'd like to partner with us to support our mission and ministries, you can make a secure online donation to the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict here.

Sincerely,

Karen Rose, OSB
