Sister Gen Maiers

,

May -- the month of graduations at high school, college and even kindergarten! At our neighbors', the College of Saint Benedict (CSB), the countdown has started for college students. Here on our campus approximately 500 young women will be graduating on May 9. There's excitement and joy in the air as seniors achieve this milestone. At the same time saying "goodbye" to their friends and the place that has been a second home for the last four years is tough.

The end of the school year, with 2000 students leaving the college campus, also creates a different atmosphere for us at the monastery. We will miss our college students but we Sisters also enjoy a quieter life for a time! However, summer brings many other activities -- retreats, Jubilee, reunions, etc. And there's always activity on the college campus including camps for young people throughout the summer.

No, it is not a rumor! Our Sacred Heart Chapel will be closed from May 11 through June 5. However, the Sisters aren't taking a vacation from praying and celebrating Eucharist! Repairs to the chapel dome and making the building more energy efficient, including changing to energy-saving lights, has been on the docket for over a year. Sister Margaret Wurm, plant manager, made every effort to schedule the work  when it will cause the least disturbance.

Our Sunday Eucharist will be celebrated in the Gathering Place at 10:30 a.m. for all Sundays in May after May 10. Weekdays, except Fridays, Eucharist will be celebrated at 5 p.m. in Rosamond A -- an elevator makes easy access. You are welcome to come and worship with us on any of these days.

The closing of the chapel also means that we will not have a memorial service this summer for deceased Sisters. This service began a few years ago and normally takes place every two years on a Saturday between CSB graduation and Memorial Day. It consists of a prayer service in chapel, procession to the cemetery to visit and pray at the graves of your loved ones followed by refreshments and visiting in the Gathering Place. Plan now for the May 2016.

Often we hear that Saint Benedict's Monastery is the best kept secret. Well, the secret is getting out! Marion Bach, Director of Faith Formation from St. Joseph Parish brought 55 students and catechists on Sunday, April 19, to see and experience a few hours with the sisters at the monastery. The confirmation class had brunch with the Sisters; Sister Mary Weidner took them on a mini tour of the sacred spaces; and then Marion provided a prayer reflection experience in the chapel. The Sisters enjoyed conversing with these well-mannered young people. It was inspiring to see the efforts made by the director and catechists to support young people in developing their faith. Parents must be grateful to Marion and the catechists for the help their children receive in living their commitment to Jesus Christ.

Easter Joy
April has been a month of joy-filled events at the monastery beginning with Easter. The beautiful setting of Sacred Heart Chapel is a perfect background for the liturgies led by our gifted musicians and singers in the monastic Schola.

Sister Karen Streveler took some photographs so we can give you a taste of our Easter worship. You'll note that ministers are wearing the new liturgical gowns donated last year - thank you!

60th Jubilee

A second major celebration, which took place on Saturday, April 18, was the gift of marking the 60th anniversary of monastic profession for eight of our Sisters. Here they are - still smiling after 60 years!

April also saw Sisters at Saint Benedict's Monastery recognizing the service given by our wonderful volunteers.

Volunteer coordinator, Sister Jean Schwartz, her assistant Sister Clara Antony, monastery treasurer, Sister Ardella Kvamme and Sister Bernadette Weber, who is well known to mailing volunteers, led the thanks on behalf of all the community.

The evening included a prayer service, a meal and a musical program performed by Sisters under the direction of Sister Margaret Mandernach.

 Snow and Spirituality

April. So why do we have a picture of  Sister Trish Dick wearing snow goggles?

S. Trish recently featured in the University of Denver's Graduate School of Social Work magazine -- GSSW. She has been leading dogsledding retreats for CSB/SJU undergraduates for several years  and developed them into "her capstone project for the Animals and Human Health certificate program offered by GSSW's Institute for Human Animal Connection." Adjunct professor, Erica Elvove, wrote: " Through nature-based experiential learning, the retreat challenges and provides spiritual guidance for a group of undergraduates in their last semester."

Benedictine Friends
Blessing seniors: Karen Streveler, OSB
The Benedictines Friends program, led by Sister Lois Wedl, exists to build a sense of community between College of Saint Benedict students and the monastery. First year students are paired with a Sister-friend whom they can then meet up with periodically both at "Friend" events and informally. Many of the relationships formed last well beyond college years. In April, the final event of this school year took place. As well as visiting, the evening included bingo, blessing the graduating seniors and a "thank you" to prioress Sister Michaela Hedican and CSB president Dr. Mary Hinton for their support of the program.

 Women in Ministry

The Sophia Program for Women in Ministry provides a spiritual network and support for women of all denominations who are employed in a variety of church ministries. The participants (a circle of six to eight women) meet three times a year for two years. A new circle will form this fall. Contact Sister Mary Weidner on 320 363 8987 or mweidner@csbsju.edu for more information.

 Celebrating Nature

Our April celebrations included Earth Day on April 22. Kate Ritger, manager of Common Ground Garden and also one of our Oblates, led a program at the Spirituality Center which allowed participants to concentrate on the spirituality of creation and the gifts we receive from the earth.

Yesterday Sisters joined members of the College of Saint Benedict to welcome the fish back to the fishpond. For the first time ever, Sister Michaela Hedican was asked to say a prayer of blessing as part of the ceremony. Sister Karen Rose took some pictures ... from a distance. You can just about see S. Michaela right in the center, dressed in Benedictine black and white.

We're delighted to see the fish back in their summer home!
