Council Targets Problem Properties

A citywide effort to address abandoned and foreclosed property maintenance, and chronic nuisance properties has resulted in two new city laws (press release). The ordinances require owners to keep their property maintained and secured; set new penalties for properties cited for loud and unruly gatherings; and create a new section on "chronic nuisance properties." Responding to concerns, the Council introduced an amendment on December 6th that would remove domestic violence-related disturbances from the list of activities that would classify a property as a "chronic nuisance."

Council Tackles Election Day Problems

On Wednesday, December 5th, the Providence City Council held a meeting with the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Board of Elections and the Executive Secretary of the Providence Board of Canvassers to discuss the many issues, including long lines and machine failures, reported at Providence's polling places during the November 6th general election. A letter from Council President Michael A.
