Kids Care Club
Kids Care Club will have a meeting Friday, November 13 3:30-4:30 in the Common Room. Kids Care will be working together with Student Council to do a school wide Turkey Drive on Friday, November 20th from 8-9am for the FoodBank.

On the 13th, kids will listen to Kate from the FoodBank, briefly talk about their organization and then they will make posters to hang around school promoting our Turkey Drive on November 20th. We have a goal of 200 turkeys this year so please help us achieve our goal in making many families happy this Thanksgiving.

If your child would like to attend the Kids Care Club meeting on Friday, Nov 13 please RSVP to Rosemary Jordan at rosiemcjordan@yahoo.com and have them bring in a food donation for P2P at the meeting.

Darien After School 
December Conference Week Events offered by Darien After School at Chelsea Piers CT:

Tuesday 12/1 thru Friday 12/4, 1:30-3:30pm:
New this year children will enjoy the added fun of using the upper level sports fields... in addition to the Gymnastics & Adventure Centers.  Same number of kids, but 2 times the fun!  Allergy Safe Snacks provided.
Registration open through 11/23 at: www.darienafterschool.com; $35 1st child, and siblings discounted at checkout.
Invite friends... children from across town are all invited to join Darien After School conference week events.

Veterans Day Share
Veterans Day is approaching and I would like to invite you to help us honor Veterans who are a part of the Holmes School family.  Any Veterans who are friends or family of Holmes School students are welcome to attend the upcoming Veterans Day Program.  The program is on Wednesday, November 11th at 9:30 am in the Common Room. 
If you know a Veteran who would like to attend please sign them up so that we can recognize them during the program.
Turn in the attached Sign-Up form or email it to me at alindroth@darienps.org by November 6th.   

Holmes School will also be honoring our Veterans with our annual "Wall of Honor."  If you have a Veteran in your family or have a family friend who served please complete a poster!  The format for that is attached.

SEPAC November Meeting
Planning Now for Secondary Transition. Thinking ahead is key to preparing a student to enter a post-high school environment successfully. Professionals from Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center (CPAC) and Darien High School will explain: The guidelines for transition planning outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), and Transition Planning and the Individualized Education Program. CPAC and DHS professionals will also provide resources and strategies and outline the active role of students, parents, teachers and adult service providers in the transition process. Transition planning begins no later than age 16, or earlier if determined appropriate by the Planning and Placement Team (PPT).

Asset of the Month:

"It's only a little white lie."  Ask your child to think of a time when it was hard to tell the truth.  Sometimes the consequences are worse when you tell the truth. It may be easier to tell a little lie, but let your child know that honesty is important to your family. Talk to your kids about the values that are most important to you so they can develop their inner compass. Point out positive values when you see them.

YWCA Parent Awareness
Please join Parent Awareness for a screening and discussion of the new documentary film entitled The Mask You Live In from the Director of Miss Representation on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 7:00 - 9:00 pm Darien Library (1441 Post Road) including a discussion with James McGinn, LCSW of the Family Centers of Darien,   The Mask You Live In is an exploration of young American masculinity and the social stereotypes that surround it. Boys in America are more six times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with behavior disorders, prescribed stimulant medications, drop out of school, binge drink, and commit violent crimes or suicide -  "Are we failing our boys?"  The film is 90 minutes long and is suitable for parents of boys in elementary school and above.  For more information click here.  Registration is recommended: www.ywcadariennorwalk.org/parent-awareness/489-upcoming-events.

Weed Beach Expansion Survey 
We need your input for planning purposes now and in the near future.The Town of Darien purchased property adjacent to Weed Beach and this has provided us with the opportunity to extend Weed Beach Park. Darien YMCA and All Star FC
will run a 14-week season of indoor soccer. The sessions will take place at the YMCA, Tokeneke Elementary and Royle Elementary schools. Each class will consist of skill and technique training and then playing Futsal - the best way to play fast indoor soccer. The coaches will challenge players of all ranges of ability and will ensure that everyone has fun in the sessions - working on shooting, dribbling, passing and defending as well as teaching some soccer tactics to the players.

REGISTRATION FOR SPRING 2016 DARIEN LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL IS NOW OPEN FOR GIRLS K-8TH GRADE 
Registration is divided into to categories, Returning Players and New Players.  Visit www.dybs.org to register, click on the Register Online tab on the left.
Have your child learn the fundamentals of hitting, throwing and catching.  Each team within the league holds frequent practices throughout the season to prepare for its games.  The emphasis is on teaching the important skills to progress through Darien Softball while giving the girls an opportunity to play constantly and have fun!

Come to The Depot's inaugural book club run by Teen Librarian Erica Gauquier of the Darien Library. The club for middle school-aged teens will meet on Tuesday, November 10th and 17th from 3 - 4 pm @ The Depot. 
 
For the first meeting, the book Paper Towns by John Green, will be provided for club members. Reading the book isn't a must to come to the discussion, but it will help!
