Please support Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this Halloween. This program began in 1950 as a way for kids to help kids in need of more than candy. Since then, children have gone door-to-door with their UNICEF collection boxes on Halloween, calling out "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!" They have raised more than $175 million for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF over the past 65 years. UNICEF improves the lives of children throughout the world by providing immunizations and medicine, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. For more information, please visit: http://www.unicefusa.org/trick-or-treat
So please save your spare change over the coming weeks and get ready to fill your child's Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box. Last year Holmes School families donated over $1,400 to UNICEF. Thank you for your generous support!

Have you ever wondered how to best help your child develop strong study skills and a love for learning? Youth are more likely to grow up healthy when they report doing at least one hour of homework every school day.
As a parent you can create a home environment that enables your child to study effectively and excel academically.
- Talk to your child about their school work and homework. Ask them about what they're learning, what they enjoy and what they find difficult.
- Set up a homework area that will encourage your child to study on a regular basis. Find a space away from distractions - including television noise and talking on the phone.
- Make yourself available as your child does homework. Sit nearby and write a letter, pay bills or read a book. Provide guidance when they ask for help.
- Don't be afraid to talk with teachers if your child is getting more homework than he or she can handle.

How much fun can a dad have with his kids?? The Darien YMCA Adventure Guides and Princesses is a school-year program where fathers and their elementary school-aged children participate in various indoor and outdoor activities in a group setting. Events and activities are organized and scheduled by volunteer fathers. Dads/Sons and Dads/Daughters are put into smaller "tribes" according to school affiliations. Individual tribes will host local events for their own group, which create strong social bonds. Tribal events have included pumpkin carving, gingerbread house making, skiing, sporting events, bowling, and painting. The major annual events are attended by all tribes of the Darien Nation and include an array of community service and fun events. They include the Initiation Ceremony, the Winter Campout, the YTakeover, whitewater rafting as well as marching in the Darien Memorial Day Parade. As a group we rake leaves for senior citizens in our autumn "Leaves for Ladies" event and volunteer for the Darien Spring Clean Up. For more information about the program, please call April Greene at the Darien YMCA at 655-8228, extension 1309, or email Nation Chief Craig Schorr at craig.schorr@yahoo.com. *** Darien Arts Center Sign up now for a fun & crafty Halloween workshop for ages 5 and up.
