We are looking forward to welcoming all willing helpers: working parents or stay-at-home parents, moms or dads, there is an opportunity for you to be involved and we want to meet and greet you! So fill out your neon yellow card (let us know if you did not receive one) and either stamp it and drop in the mail, or return via the backpack to school. Please note that next year's room parents will be drafted via this card. In the event we receive more volunteers than needed, room parents will be selected by lottery.
Below are positions that need volunteers:
Directory Committee, Publisher: Assemble the directory (content, photos, student data) into booklet form and coordinate with the print shop for distribution at fall open house. This job can be done mostly from home/ office, with help and service from the print shop. Approx time commitment 6-10 hours. MS Publisher or Adobe skills helpful, but not necessary.
Social Media Committee, PTO Blogger: Responsible for maintaining the Holmes PTO Website, posting announcements and information in a timely manner. These postings will be from the administration and/or the PTO regarding the interests of the Holmes community.
Special Education Parents Advisory Committee (SEPAC):This role is to serve as a conduit of information from their respective constituents (typically parents of the individual schools) to the special education administration and from the special education administration to the parents of the respective schools regarding topics and issues related to special education in Darien.
Time Commitment: Two representatives preferred. Meetings held on a monthly basis during the mid-morning on a weekday to be selected by those on the committee

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Field Day will be held on Thursday, May 28th from 1:30-3:10 pm (Raindate is Monday, June 1st from 1:30-3:10 pm)
Grade 2 and Grade 3 Field Day will be held on Friday, May 29th from 1:00-3:00 pm (Raindate is Tuesday, June 2nd from 1:00-3:00 pm)
Grade 4 and Grade 5 Field Day will be held on Friday, May 29th from 9:30-11:30 am (Raindate is Tuesday, June 2nd from 9:30-11:30am)
IMPORTANT SAFETY AND SECURITY REMINDER:
For both Field Days, please remember that ALL ATTENDEES (parents or other family members) MUST Sign In and Sign Out at the front desk when arriving at or leaving Field Day. Everyone on the field or back playground who is not a student or staff member MUST have a Visitor Badge.

All parents of students in second to fifth grade are invited to a book club discussion of a popular and old favorite children's book, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. Through the discussion, facilitated by Cory Gillette, participants will learn: the expectations for comprehension in a book of that level, the characteristics of books at lower and higher levels and how parents can support comprehension at home.
Copies of the book are available at the Darien Public Library and Barrett's Bookstore.

All students are required to have a homework folder. Students in grades 3-5 are required to have an assignment book. These can be purchased as part of the supply pack or separately. Darien YMCA Hosts Fitness Challenge Fundraiser for Kids & Adults
Registration is ongoing for The Y Games: Team Charity Challenge, a fitness fundraiser to benefit the Darien Y's Financial Assistance Program. Event will be held Sunday, June 7th with check-in at 8am and event from 9am to 12pm. All abilities welcome to form a team of four people for this fun community fitness challenge of 7 events. The Youth Commission is pleased to announce its Family Concert Series once again at Weed Beach in June! Scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday's, the line-up is as follows: June 3 - "Annie & the Natural Wonder Band"; June 10 - DHS Jazz Band; June 17 - Lou del Bianco; June 24 - Tom Weber. (The cost to attend concerts is $4.00 per person; $10 per vehicle per concert.)
On the 24th, the concert will be preceded by the 9th annual Sand Castle Building Contest! Co-sponsored by TD Bank, the contest is free and begins @ 4:00 p.m. Following the concert, the Youth Commission/Parks & Recreation Department will be sponsoring their annual movie at the Beach. The feature film this year is TBD. Showtime is dusk (@ 8:30 p.m.). Uncle's by the Shore will be open for dinner, however there will be NO lifeguards on duty, so swimming will be at your own risk. Strides-for-Strength walk-a-thon hosted by the Unite For Africa student club at DHS. 100% of the monies raised will be used to purchase wheelchairs and prosthetics for people living with disabilities in Tanzania, East Africa. Darienite Kristin Hocker will kick off the walk. Suggested donation for walking: $10. There will be a bake sale, music, prizes and lots of fun. All ages are warmly welcome.

YW Offering Children's Art Workshop this Summer - The YW will offer art workshops during the following weeks this summer: June 22-25, June 29 - July 2, and August 3 - 6. Workshops are open to children ages 5 through 10 and will be taught by Rowana Shepard. Art projects will focus on utilizing used, re-used, and recycled materials. Pedestrian Infrastructure meeting: Tuesday, May 26, 7:30 pm, Town Hall Auditorium
Attention all walkers, runners, joggers and bikers! The Board of Selectmen has created a Pedestrian Infrastructure Advisory Committee (PIAC) to engage the community in discussions of potential improvements to the Town's pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure. The PIAC members have not yet been named - a sub-committee of the RTM is seeking volunteers to serve on the PIAC.Some PIAC seats have been reserved for non-RTM members of the public. One of them could be you! This is a great opportunity to get involved early with this critical issue.

Learn to Sail this Summer!
Darien Junior Sailing still has limited space available for all levels of instruction from the novice to the advanced level junior sailor. Instruction includes daily sailing lessons at Weed Beach on Optimist sailboats for sailors 8-14 years of age. Programs run across three sessions beginning on Wednesday, June 17th through Friday, August 7th. Registration and further information can be found online at http://www.darienjuniorsailing.com. Darien Soccer Association Fall Registration is now OPEN. Simply go to www.dariensoccer.org and click on the "Register Online" button on the left hand side to register. Travel soccer registration will run from May 6th - May 15th (Late Fee of $100 May 16th - 20th). Club Excel and K- 2 Soccer registration is open from May 6th through June 1st (late fee June 2nd - June 1st). Key Dates and Tryout Schedules are posted on the website. The K-2 program focuses on teaching kids from kindergarten through 2nd grade the basics and enjoyment of soccer. Kids going into third grade and up can play either Club Excel or Travel: Club Excel is our house league.Kids must try out for the Travel program.Information on our programs is also available on our web site. Come and see why the DSA is now one of the most successful soccer organizations in Connecticut!
DARIEN ARTS CENTER: The Darien Arts Center encourages artists of all ages to participate in its 57th Annual Art Show and Sale, held Saturday, May 30, through Saturday, June 6.
