Greetings!

Welcome to another Blue Ribbon Flies weekly newsletter. Thanks for tuning in. Settle in and we'll tell you what's happening around West Yellowstone and our other favorite spots, show you the fly and the material of the week, and tempt you to plan your next trip with us.

We've got a lot to show you and tell you about this week, so settle down in a comfy chair and dig in. Take a break from work or play, grab a cup of coffee, and pretend you're leaning on the counter here at Blue Ribbon Flies.

We hope to see you soon, right here in West Yellowstone, but until then we wish you happy and healthy fishing and fly tying. All our best to each of you. We wish you were here, but until you are we'll keep you in the loop. Thanks for stopping by.

 What's New
 What's Happening in Yellowstone Country

Well the boys are getting geared up and it's time once again to start off the 2013 season. Like we have every year we start off the season with the Spring Road Trips and this year Cam and Geoff are leading the "Cadman" crew to several different rivers. This trip starts on April 2nd so just a few days from now. Where the heck did winter go? It seems as just yesterday we wrapped up the fall season. Whatever the case the boys are jacked up and ready to go.

The Madison Recreation Committee has finished with it's work and will present its recommendations to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission in Helena on April 11th.

Here are the major recommendations the CAC will present to the FWP Commission:

  • Open the Madison to year-around fishing from Lyon Bridge downstream to Ennis. Presently the river is closed above McAtee Bridge to Quake Lake from the end of February to the third Saturday in May. FWP biologists say opening this section will not harm spring spawning rainbows and will help relieve some of the fishing pressure below McAtee.
  • The CAC suggests FWP collect more and better information about the numbers and types of users before taking further management actions. To this end the CAC recommends installing "iron rangers" at every fishing access site. Anyone using the site would be asked to voluntarily fill out a short form and deposit it in the iron ranger. FWP would collect such information for three years before considering further actions.
  • Move the boat launch ramp at the Lyon Bridge FAS to the south end of the site. This would help relieve congestion on the busiest days at the busiest access site on the Madison.
  • Leave unchanged the existing "row v. wade" regulations from Raynolds Pass to Lyon Bridge. The CAC was unable to come up with an acceptable compromise on this pesky issue, so it recommends keeping the status quo: no fishing from boats in this section, wade angling only, but allow "float to fish" as pictured above.
  • Ban all glass containers on the lower river from the Warm Springs FAS downstream, the section of the river heavily used by recreational floaters in the summer months, the so-called "splash & giggle" set.

The FWP Commission will weigh these recommendations and accept, amend or reject any or all of them. It will then instruct the department to draft a Madison Recreation Management Plan that would be submitted to the public for comment prior to it being implemented. The meeting of the FWP Commission April 11 is open to the public.

Bucky, Cam, John, Jackie and I look forward to seeing you soon in Yellowstone. Remember that lodging is booking up for the season so call today for ideas on where to stay, when to come and where to fish this season! Give us a call today too for fly tying ideas, help and tips, or ideas on gear and everything fly-fishing. We fish, we are open all year and we love to hear from you!

 Fishing Report
 Weekly Conditions and Tips

We are all thinking about warmer days here at BRF so we pulled this great shot out of the archives from Skip Cavanaugh

Fishing Report by Craig Mathews

The Madison Spring Baetis are coming off now in good number in selected places. Look for them around noon to 4pm on the lower Madison from Bear Trap to Black's Ford and downstream to Three Forks, Mt. The river between the lakes has been very good with small nymphs like our Shop Vac and Madison River Micro Midge Nymph. Below Varney the river is fishing great with big stones trailing a Rick's Red or Red Dip. Streamer action has been strong too with woolheads, soft hackle streamers in white and olive/black and some bizarre fly creation we have in our bins with an orange bead head and dual dark rabbit strip fin, it has no real name I know of but Cam, Drew and the guides swear by it.

The Yellowstone is fishing now. You should find Baetis on this river near Livingston along with midges. Spring Creeks are all fishing well as is the Boulder River.

Around Dillon, Mt the Beaverhead is coming alive during midge times and the first Baetis can be found there now too in a few spots. Call us before heading over. Look to for the Big Hole to crank up this week and next.

 Fly of the Week
 Baetis Soft Hackle Emerger

Big changes are here on the fishing front. The first Baetis mayflies are coming off now in fits and spurts mixed with strong midge emergences. But, trout remember and recognize the blue-winged olives and can be fooled with #20-22 Baetis Sparkle Duns now on rivers like the Madison and Henry's Fork. Still, if you want to fool BIG trout make sure you tie up some of our world famous Baetis Soft Hackle and BWO Foam Emergers to go along with your sparkle duns!

This soft hackle is tied with the shoulder feathers from a mallard wing. The natural preneal oils found on these feathers serve as a natural waterproofing and help keep this fly riding just above the surface film.

Watch Craig tie the Baetis Soft Hackle emerger in this Video.

Here are More great Soft Hackle Patterns.

Fly Tying Material of the Week
 Combo Thread and Duck Wings

I've been playing with a new soft hackle Baetis emerger, one tied with olive and yellow Combo Thread and a soft hackle of duck wing covert feathers. Easy to tie and the fish love the segmented look I get with the Combo thread body. Too, it is much more durable than a body wrapped with turkey or goose quill. We have a great supply of Mallard duck wings from a fine fall shooting so take advantage of our Duck Wing Sale here in. Bucky and I have washed, dried and bagged them up just for our tiers. And where can you get wild ducks on a 2 for 1 price. Regular Price $4.50 NOW $2.25

For this and other fine materials check here!

 Fly Boxes
Myran, Easy Grip and BRF Waterproof boxes

I've mostly filled my BRF waterproof fly boxes with needed dry-fly patterns for spring fishing. I have made the leap too for a Easy Grip Box. Both force me to organize my patterns. Both are handy, light-weight and dry flies after use. Both too are the perfect size to fit in my vest, easy to feel and not fumble for, not bulky plus they look good coming out of your pockets when fishing the rivers and streams! The Myran has superb pocket-sized boxes made of nonbrittleMBS plastic, featuring brass hingepins and excellent latches.

More great streamside accessories.. ..

 Guide Trip of The Week
 Fish With The Best!

Another special BRF guided fishing trip resulting from Bucky, Cam, John and my meeting 2 weeks ago is this week's featured Guide Trip of the Week; a Gulper Trip on Hebgen Lake. So many anglers come in and say they'd love to learn to catch the huge rainbow and brown trout referred to as "Gulpers" on Hebgen Lake. Most do not have a boat to do so, or they feel they can't cast far enough, or don't know enough about this most challenging fishing opportunity. Blue Ribbon is fortunate to have guides who specialize in Gulpers on Hebgen. Our guides will show you the techniques, flies, strategies and skills needed to consistently take these wonderful fish averaging 18". Once hooked most gulpers take you well into your backing on the first run. How many times do you get into your backing during the fishing season? Gulpers are sure to get you there!

Just to show people how great Gulper fishing is we are offering a Gulper Trip Sampler. These trips will start July 25th and go until August 31st and will Cost $350.00. These trips will start at the shop at 8:00am to 9:00am and go until 1:00pm or 2:00pm respectively.

So if you have always wanted to try Gulper fishing, but didn't want to spend all day on the lake, now is the time to take advantage of this first time deal.

 Books of Yellowstone
Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide and Fly Fishing Yellowstone National Park

We are featuring companion books this week in this report. Our own The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide along with Nate Schweber's Fly Fishing Yellowstone National Park. We guarantee you'll find our book most helpful as an authoritative guide to the waters of Yellowstone with references to productive rivers, lakes and streams along with listing and discussing the insect hatches and terrestrials, best fly patterns and tactics and more. Nate's little book is touted as "an insider's guide to the 50 best places to fish Yellowstone". John and I have chapters in Nate's fine book. We know you will enjoy them both!

More great fishing books.
