Welcome to another Blue Ribbon Flies weekly newsletter. Thanks for tuning in. Settle in and we'll tell you what's happening around West Yellowstone and our other favorite spots, show you the fly and the material of the week, and tempt you to plan your next trip with us.

We've got a lot to show you and tell you about this week, so settle down in a comfy chair and dig in. Take a break from work or play, grab a cup of coffee, and pretend you're leaning on the counter here at Blue Ribbon Flies.

We hope to see you soon, right here in West Yellowstone, but until then we wish you happy and healthy fishing and fly tying. All our best to each of you. We wish you were here, but until you are we'll keep you in the loop. Thanks for stopping by.

 What's New
 What's Happening in Yellowstone Country

Fishing the Bear Trap

Spring has arrived in Yellowstone country. The first grizzly bears of spring are coming out of hibernation. One has been walking the Rendezvous Cross-county Ski Trail area and another patrolling Muleshoe Bend along the Firehole River in the Park. Geese along the Madison are searching for nesting sites, blackbirds have returned and we expect the first bluebirds and robins to return in the next week. Too, we will see the first emergences of Spring Baetis mayflies on rivers like the Henry's Fork and Madison in the next 2 weeks. Midges are going great guns on all area rivers and fishing during their emergence times has been great on the Fork, Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone. Livingston's spring creeks are fishing well during midge times and blue-winged olives are expected on these fine streams any day now.

One of the most spectacular sights in late March and early April is watching the Madison Valley's wintering elk herd migrate south, upriver from Indian, Bear, Wolf and Hyde Creeks. Over 4500 elk wintered in the valley this year and at times it looks like the Serengeti with the elk, pronghorn and mule deer making their way back to summer range along the river.

I'm still the nursemaid at our house as Jackie is still hobbling around but doing very now on her rebuilt foot. She even tells me she will be ready to fish again by the time Mothers' Day Caddis emerge on the lower Madison and Yellowstone in 6 weeks. I'm glad I did not give her elk rifle up as she says she is applying for a special elk tag this week too!

Yvon Chouinard and John Dutton were here fishing and working on Yvon and my book to be released late this year. John, our editor, kept us focus and with pens in hand most of the time however, we did sneak out a couple times to fish the Madison near Ennis. John had never fished Tenkara and he ended with close to 20 fine trout the first day fishing one. For those of you waiting, our Tenkara fly tying DVD and book are both back in stock and so are our famous BST Flies.

Bucky and I have been working on a couple special orders for flies and packing and dying materials. Jackie is working with the Madison River Foundation on a summer project. Cam and Dan just returned from Belize and Mexico where they had great saltwater trips and Dan scored his first permit. All of us at the shop are envious of their tans for sure.

As usual in the rest of this issue, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peek at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.

You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the summer and fall to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing and fly tying in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.

 Fishing Report
 Weekly Conditions and Tips

Fishing Report by Craig Mathews

The Henry's Fork is fishing fairly well during midge times below Ashton, Id. Some surface feeding can be expected on calm days, overcast is best. The same with the Gallatin downstream of Porcupine Creek when it is overcast and calm. The Madison in Bear Trap Canyon will fish with midges when conditions are calm. We took some nice fish here this week right along the road near the Norris Bridge. Fish were rising and we easily fooled with a #20 Zelon Midge.

The river below the dam is stacking up with rainbows now up from Quake Lake although some big browns are being taken at Cabin Creek and downstream. Look for risers on calm days when midges are active. Normally we do not see a lot of rising trout here in the early season but there have been this year.

The Yellowstone can be counted on now as can the creeks like Nelson's, DePuy's and Armstrong's. Good midge times on all these waters and Baetis are to be expected very soon.

June will be a great time to fish Yellowstone this spring by all indications. Our nearly "normal" snowpack bodes well for early fishing on the Park's Firehole, Madison and Gibbon and they open in only 10 short weeks. Our bins are full of White Miller Caddis patterns in preparation as well as PMD and Baetis like our famous sparkle duns and foam emergers. You can tell, we aren't too excited as we continue our countdown to the late May opener!

I hope to see you in the shop soon. All of us appreciate your response to our first on-line catalogue and look forward to your emails and calls. Stop in, the coffee is always on!

 Fly of the Week
 Black X-Caddis

Along with the pupa, the adults of the Glossosoma caddis are extremely important in a trout's diet. The venerable X caddis in black accurately matches this overlooked insect and stage. Size 20

Fly Tying Material of the Week
 Micro Caddis Elk

Our supply of micro-elk hair just came in from the tannery. We like to use this elk for tying our Black X Caddis pattern as it has short black tips and flares just enough to tie smaller caddis fly patterns.

 Amadou Dryer & Sheets
 Fungus at it's best!

A fresh shipment of Amadou, both in the patch and sheet, has arrived from Sweden via Switzerland. This just in time for spring midge and Baetis mayfly times as it is just the ticket to dry and freshen tiny flies between fish!

Amadou is a fungus that absorbs about five times its weight in water. The Amadou is glued in between two pieces of tanned leather. Also comes with a string for hanging from your vest or "D" ring. It is great for drying your flies after catching a fish and preparing the fly for floatant again. The sheet measures at 4X5 inches which allows you to make your own dryer.

 Guide Trip of The Week
 Fish With The Best!

Herman and Cary Walker along with our own Dan Rust arrived back home early Monday morning. Dan caught his first Permit ever and reported seeing numerous fish throughout the week. Dan said, "The bone fishing was unbelievable, and the abundance of fish exceeded my expectations." Dan saw upwards of 50-60 Permit per day and had no less than 20 great shots. This was Herman and Cary's first flats experience and they caught loads of bonefish as well as many different species. Action was something that was not lacking, being within swimming distance to the second largest coral reef in the world.

Aside from being in a prime bonefish destination the trio enjoyed fine lodging and food. The best and freshest foods in the area were expertly prepared by the chef, Carlos and his helpers, Maria and Arleny. "I think I gained 10 pounds." Dan said. "Fishing just scratches the surface for this trip. It's hard to explain and would take me a week just to tell about how great this place really is." Words and pictures just don't do this place justice, you just have to experience it yourself.

2014 will bring a slightly different lineup for Saltwater trips that will perhaps combine Belize and Mexico. The leg work has been done and we are all very excited about what we have in store for you in 2014.
