IBM i & Open Systems Security Tips

You may not realize it, but many of the organizations recently breached are large IBM i shops. We'll never know whether our beloved IBM i was breached because that information is never published. But to dismiss the possibility out of hand and ignore steps that you can take to protect your organization and-more importantly-the data on your IBM i systems is putting that data at significant risk.

This article focuses on protecting passwords since exploiting stolen credentials (user IDs and passwords) is one method being used by hackers to gain access to data.  We're not going to stop the hackers, but there are things that we can do to make their efforts more difficult and cause them to direct their attack somewhere else. Following this advice about passwords may help and it certainly can't hurt.

** Jeff Uehling  is currently assigned to the development group of the IBM i OS, specifically in the security group that is located in Rochester, Minnesota.  Current job responsibilities include Business Architect for the core IBM i OS, design and development of security functionality for IBM i and council member of the IBM security technical community.  35 years of service with IBM has been spent in operating system development with over 31 of those years in the security area.  Jeff's development career has involved numerous security and network related design and programming assignments on the S/38, AS/400, iSeries and now IBM i operating systems.  Jeff's primary interests lie in the area of system integrity and now, given the current business environment, cryptography and compliance.
