Several years ago, focus was placed on the privacy of PII (Personally Identifiable Information.) PII data is defined as data which can uniquely identify an individual. Common examples are numbers such as credit cards, bank accounts, drivers licenses, social security and social insurance numbers.
According to IBM's website on big data, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day and that 90% of the data collected has been collected in the last two years! IBM's CEO Ginni Rometty said in a speech to the Council On Foreign Relations that she wants us to think of big data as the next natural resource - akin to steam, electricity and oil. In other words, the world is going to be relying on big data to move forward and progress.
