Dear Yavneh Family,
Summer is a time for students to explore different areas and activities from the academic year. From camping to international travel, seasonal jobs to college campus programs, our Yavneh students and college-age alumni will be fanning out far and wide to engage in learning and employment that will often inform their decisions about college and career. Lucky is the program, mentor or employer who has a Yavneh Bulldog as a student/intern/employee this summer!
Speaking of learning, there is no better time of year for students to devote extended time to reading, writing and other projects than summer. Whether it's assigned reading for a class, or so-called pleasure reading or journaling, please remember that our students' ability to read, analyze and express themselves is what often sets a Yavneh applicant apart from others when it comes time for college, job and overall life skills.
It has been an incredible year for us on Merit Drive, including terrific college acceptances; athletic successes and artistic triumphs; and deep commitment to Jewish Learning and Tikkun Olam, all in a warm and loving environment that "makes Yavneh Yavneh."
On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I wish you a wonderful and rejuvenating summer. We look forward welcoming y'all back in the Fall,
Dr. David A. Portnoy, Head of School

The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot begs us to answer the following three questions. "Im ain ani li, mi li? If I am not for myself who am I? V'im ani la'atzmi, mah ani? And if I am for myself who am I? V'im lo achshav amosai? And if not now, when?" As the answers to these three questions form the basis of our identity and create a blueprint for self-improvement, it behooves us to analyze these questions and understand not just what is being asked of us, but more importantly, if we have the answers to these questions.
The Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter, explains that each of us was endowed with specific talents and unique skills. With our individual capabilities we are expected to complete particular missions and goals. These cannot necessarily be completed by anyone else, they are ours and ours alone to complete. The Mishnah is encouraging us to discover what it is that we must accomplish in life. In order to do so, we must make this question part of our daily monologue. We must ask ourselves, "If I am not for myself, what am I?" If I fail to live up to my talents, potential, and unique abilities, what am I? Of what value are all of those gifts that G-D has given me if I cannot achieve with them my intended tasks? If I cannot fulfill my own destiny, then who am I? I am certainly not who I am supposed to be.
