From the Head of School
Shabbat Shalom

It's time to give a shout out to our Poets, Talmudists and Journalists this week!

For the first time, this year we took our artists and performers off campus to Half Price Books for a special evening "out in the community," under the leadership of Ms. Huffaker and Maestro Corbet.  It was a terrific opportunity for our students to present to a wider audience and spread their Yavneh talent and pride.  According to Ms. H, "It was a great evening all around!"

With special props to our students in the Iyun track of our Judaic Studies Program, the group recently finished a Perek of Mesechet Makkot, and as such, were the beneficiaries of a vaunted Yavneh tradition: a morning of camaraderie and spirited exercise at a local paintball park.  You should have seen the faces of our most dedicated Talmud students as they entered the student lounge just in time for lunch on Thursday!

And a well-deserved  tip of the hat (H/T for our Twitter users) to our journalism students for producing another great issue of our award-winning The Bulldog Print, due out early next week.  In addition to their fantastic work on stories and issues here at school and beyond, this issue addresses the complicated issue of censorship in a reasoned and mature way that prompts us all to think deeply about important issues, which is the goal of our reporters and editors each time they go to press.  Yashar Koach to all of you!

Shabbat Shalom - and Go Bulldogs!

Dr. P

Amongst the list of non-kosher birds found in this week's Parsha one particular bird stands out for its noticeable name, the chasidah, the stork. Rashi wonders why the stork would be known by the name chasidah, which literally translates to the pious ones. What is so pious about the stork? How would it have received this illustrious name? Rashi explains that the stork is in fact a very kind and generous bird. Aside from delivering newborn babies to eagerly expectant parents, the stork also performs innumerable acts of kindness with its fellow birds by sharing its food.

Rav Yitzchok Meir Alter, the Gerrer Rebbe is puzzled by this description of the storks' nature. The Ramban writes that the reason that some birds are kosher and others are not is because of their personality and temperament. The birds that have a cruel personality, which we generally label as birds of prey are not kosher, while the birds that eat mostly vegetation are kosher because they are kinder creatures, as evidenced by the fact that they do not prey on other creatures. The Ramban employs a frequently quoted thought in Judaic philosophy- we are what we eat. We believe that what we ingest actually has a profound impact on our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. If we were permitted to digest cruel birds we too would adopt some of their negative qualities. It is therefore imperative upon us to only eat from kosher birds, which are kinder and generous by nature and thereby avoid acquiring any negative traits. If so, asks the Rebbe, why should the stork be considered an un-kosher bird, it certainly seems to have enviable traits? We should have no concerns about acquiring any undesirable traits from its consumption.

Rabbi Spiro Speaks on Historic Claims to Israel

The entire student body had the privilege of learning with Rabbi Ken Spiro Thursday afternoon.  Rabbi Spiro is visiting from Israel and spoke to the community about competing Jewish and Muslim claims to Israel and Jerusalem, utilizing a well-detailed historical timeline and many compelling stories.  The Yavneh program was designed in preparation for our students' likely encounters on college campuses with anti-Israel and anti-Semitic protestors and activists.  Rabbi Spiro's presentation follows a recent community program with Ian Kandel of BBYO regarding the BDS movement sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas.  Special thanks to Rabbi Zakon of DATA for his assistance in bringing Rabbi Spiro to Yavneh!
