From the Head of School
Shabbat Shalom

Yavneh Academy stands as a stronghold of Israel advocacy and support: from our classrooms and Beit Midrash, to our Points for Peace Tournament and March of the Living senior class trip.  This coming Monday, March 14, we will be hosting Ian Kandel, Senior Director of BBYO International, for an important community lecture and teach-in about college campus anti-Semitism and the BDS movement for Yavneh students and other community teens.  Our special thanks to Ruthy Rosenberg and Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum for organizing this critical program on our campus!

As I often remind our students, their health and wellness is the most important thing to us.  With special thanks to Rabbi Grebenau, we hosted Janet Henson of Jewish Family Services this week for a special parent meeting and grade level meetings for all our students.  Ms. Henson spoke with our students about making healthy choices and dealing with stress, and was very well received.  As we continue to hear distressing news from Israel and our own community, please know that the emotional health of our students is always front and center for us.

I thank you all for your support of our students and families!

Chodesh Tov, Shabbat Shalom and Go Bulldogs!

Dr. P

Although this week's Parsha, Parshat Pekudei appears to be mostly a review of the Mishkan's construction and the specifications of the priestly garments, there are still many lessons to be gleaned from the Parsha. In the review of the Tzitz, the head covering for the High Priests, the verse states, "And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and they wrote upon it a writing, like the engravings of a signet: Holy to G-D." The Imrei Emes (Rabbi Avraham Mordechai of Gur) is puzzled about the specific language in this verse. Why are the verbs in the verses - "they should make, they should write", written in plural? The verse seems to be inaccurate as Betzalel the talented craftsman who was in charge of the Mishkan's construction was fully capable of fashioning the Tzitz by himself and presumably that is exactly what he did. There was no "they" who worked on the Tzitz, it should simply be "And he made the plate and he wrote on it"?

This special joyous month that we are currently celebrating is known as the month of "Adar." There are many etymological interpretations of this word. The Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter says that the word Adar is reminiscent of a Talmudic statement that says, "One who wants to keep his possessions should plant an Adar tree."

Program Launch: JFS @ Yavneh

This week we launched a new educational initiative at Yavneh with fantastic results. At Yavneh we aim to educate the whole student and make sure that they are gaining the life skills they need to flourish in their high school years and beyond.  In addition to our rigorous core curriculum we need to help students learn about responsibility, consequences and good choices. Janet Henson, a very experienced therapist with the JFS, spoke to parents on Tuesday night and then to each grade at Yavneh individually on Wednesday. Parents and students appreciated Janet's style and felt energized by the conversations and thought provoking ideas. The conversations with the students centered around making good choices and recognizing what we have to give up when we make certain choices. This serves as a fertile ground and a safe space to discuss risky behavior which we know our teens can be exposed to during adolescence and beyond. We plan to have Janet return a number of times each year to continue to form a relationship with the student body. These conversations are critical in the development of our students and we were very happy to kick them off with such a talented therapist.

9th Grade Physics Competition

Congratulations to Yavneh's 9th graders on their hard work in this year's physics competition.  Since the first week of class, they have been hard at work researching, building, and experimenting to present on one or two questions (out of 24 possibilities) asked by Ms. Pendleton.  Questions such as: "Why do rainbows form?"  "How do batteries work?" Each project was evaluated by their peers and the teachers in the Science Department. JFS Klein Internship Program
Deadline Extended to March 30

Since 2009, Jewish Family Service has provided teens from the Dallas Metroplex the opportunity to intern at one of the area's many nonprofit organizations. This program was designed as a lasting tribute to Rabbi Gerald J. Klein of Temple Emanu-El in Dallas, in celebration of his passion and commitment to issues of social justice for over 50 years. The program has helped to educate teens about nonprofit agencies and their missions through hands on learning and invaluable training and experiences.
