Shabbat Shalom

Dear Yavneh Family,
I couldn't be prouder of our Boys Varsity Basketball Team, who, for the third year in a row, made the State Division Playoffs! Overcoming numerous injuries and a tough district schedule, our Bulldogs have worked long and hard to accomplish a great deal, both on and off the court. Today they are traveling home from a hard-fought contest with cross-state rivals in Lubbock. In the words of our friends from Northwest Texas, our Yavneh boys "represent the very best in student-athletes ... they are fantastic ambassadors for your school."
Dallas will be the only place to hear Israel Affairs expert Daniel Gordis next Sunday night, as he travels for AIPAC to the Winspear Opera House. All Yavneh students and families are invited to attend (see below), and we are thrilled to have this opportunity, and to join with AIPAC as they honor Lori and Mike Cohen and Sherry and Ken Goldberg at this outstanding event!
Finally, Yavneh students are excited to participate and lead in the Yachad Shabbaton for special needs this weekend at Shaare Tefilla. Basketball, Israel Advocacy and Chesed/Community Service - sounds about right for another terrific week on our campus!
Shabbat Shalom!

The most glorious of all the priestly garments was the Choshen. This beautiful breastplate that hung atop the high priest's Eifod, was decorated with twelve precious stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes. The verse tells us that the stone representing the tribe of Benjamin was the stone known as Yashpe. Although the word Yashpeh is usually associated with jasper, the Midrash offers a fascinating etymological insight to the word.
Benjamin, the younger son of Rachel, inherited many of his mother's qualities. The Midrash claims that specifically the ability to remain silent and hold one's tongue, was bequeathed to him by our matriarch, Rachel. Teaching boisterous and sometimes babbling teenagers has made me realize that this elusive trait is not to be scoffed at; in fact I have come to treasure the quiet, taciturn students. Rachel famously exhibited silence when her sister was scandalously substituted for her under the wedding canopy by her devious father Lavan. Rather than publicly broadcast the devious machinations of her deceitful father, she was silent, allowing her elder sister to marry in her place. Although her own marital happiness could have suffered, she refused to shame her sister, instead bearing her own suffering in silence. Benjamin inheriting his mother's capacity for silence did not reveal his brothers' treacherous sale of their despised sibling Joseph.
