From the Head of School
Shabbat Shalom
Dear Yavneh Family,

Yavneh. Alumni. Basketball. Thanksgiving. Hanukkah.

It was incredible seeing so many of our alumni on campus this past week! From the nail-biting basketball games to the endless catching-up conversations, we have so much to be proud of and thankful for here at Yavneh. Extra special thanks to our Board President, Jay Kleinman, for setting up a donor challenge match for our graduates, and to Grace Rosenthal, Class of 2008, for marshaling our outstanding Alumni volunteers for the Annual Fund. Please join our more than 400 alumni by clicking here  to donate to our Annual Fund before the end of the year.

In this week's Torah portion we read about the unsuccessful attempt of Potiphar's wife to entice Yosef into sin. It is Yosef's steadfast refusal to be lured into the world of debauchery that earns him the epithet Yosef HaTzaddik (the righteous). While the piety of Yosef is a well-established fact, is it that laudable that he did not succumb to the temptation for adultery? Even the simplest of Jews know that for the three cardinal sins; adultery, idolatry, and murder one must sacrifice his own life rather than capitulate. Why is this so remarkable that Yosef resisted the overtures of Potiphar's wife?

Honoring Ezra Schwartz hy"d

We were all deeply affected by the murder of post high-school student, Ezra Schwartz hy"d, in Israel in a terror attack this past month. Yavneh will be joining dozens of other Jewish high schools in a learning project in Ezra's memory.  The schools have gotten together and decided to finish the entirety of Mishna which includes over 4,000 individual mishnayot. We have already started this project and we will be finishing our mishnayot by December 21st for Ezra's shloshim (30 days after his death). I am very proud of our participation in this beautiful project. It is a very appropriate way for us to both honor Ezra's memory and also be a part of the larger Jewish community.

Yavneh Student Leaders Share Their Passion for the School with the Akiba 8th Grade

Yavneh hosted the Akiba 8th grade on campus this week. The prospective Yavneh students were greeted by Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy, in the Beit Midrash and then participated in a text-focused learning with Rabbi Tannenbaum and Akiba alumni. They experienced the "Projectile Prediction," an experiment in which they tried to guess the angle that would enable the marble launcher to launch the marble the farthest in the science lab.
