From the Head of School
Shabbat Shalom
Dear Yavneh Family,

Amidst the sadness surrounding the tragedies in Paris, Israel and elsewhere, we are mindful of our role as educators and models for our students. We have spent a good deal of time recently teaching them about coping with loss and comforting others, while at the same time encouraging them to be hopeful and focused on their daily work and commitments.

One of the strengths of a school like Yavneh is the diversity of our student body and of wide range of talented speakers we attract to the school.

As traditional Jews, we are well accustomed to the time honored obligation to engage in prayer three times a day. The Talmud in tractate Brachos explains that each of our patriarchs instituted one of these 3 prayers. Avraham instituted Shacharit, the morning prayers, when he awoke early in the morning to perform G-D's command, the sacrifice of Isaac. Yitzchak instituted Mincha, the afternoon prayer, in anticipation of meeting his bride to be, Rivkah. In this week's Parsha we read of the last of the patriarchs, Yaakov, and his institution of Maariv, the evening prayer.

Alumni News

It was wonderful to welcome back to campus, Kelly Herson, Class of 2013. In addition to meeting with students and teachers, Kelly brought Rabbi Fully Eisenberger from the University of Michigan to address our school community at Mincha. Tying his Dvar Torah to the story of Isaac and Rebecca, Rabbi Fully spoke to our students about the importance of not judging one another based on prior actions or their background, citing examples of adolescents and college students who tend to change "quite a bit" during these very formative years of life. Thanks, Kelly and Rabbi Fully, for your visit!

Israel Advocacy Update
Zach Epstein '17

The Israeli government has officially passed the 2015-2016 state budget bill by a miniscule margin: 61-59. The voting began this past Wednesday night and extended through Thursday morning. After reviewing over 1,500 pages of objections, 30,000 specific reservations to the budget, the Knesset finally succeeded. If Prime Minister Netanyahu did not pass the budget by Thursday the government would have fallen. For the last 30 years Israel voted on the Economic Arrangements bill that accompanies the budget first, but Netanyahu did not want to take any chances.
