From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote to you about disparities between the ways many teens act at home compared to school.  Around the same time, I had the opportunity to speak with our students about their sometimes less-than-perfect behavior, particularly when people are together in large groups.  This phenomenon, explained as the anonymity-of-crowds effect, is often a contributing factor to negative behavior.  (Speaking of anonymity and negative action, see Dalya Romaner '14's timely and provocative piece below.)

And then I shared the following story with them: I told them that their parents - that's some of you! - from time to time share stories with me about them that are critical of their children, i.e., my students.  For example, "You can't believe how messy my daughter's room is at home" or "You wouldn't believe how long it takes my son to get up in the morning." And I say, "You're right.  I don't believe you.  Because the son or daughter that you may struggle with at home is not the same positive, delightful, diligent and compassionate person we - their teachers and other adults - see in school each day."  It is a stark reminder that teenagers, in particular, show a different "home personality" from the one they put on each day in school.

You should have received an Annual Fund letter from us by now.  Please be as generous as you can to support all the important work we are doing here at Yavneh. Thanks in advance for your participation and kindness!

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

Despite Purpose, Social Media Erases Voice
The Brandeis Hoot
Dayla Romaner '14

I live in a world where people are being replaced. Not by robots, but by anonymity. Cell phones have replaced face-to-face conversations, Twitter has replaced phone calls and Tinder has replaced dating. Physical action has become unnecessary; people are finding more and more ways to remain in the safety of their own homes or behind their computer screens instead of showing their faces and interacting with one another. Don't get me wrong. Social media has countless benefits, but a number of disadvantages as well....Click here to read the full piece.

Israel Advocacy Update ~
Maayan Abouzaglo '19

Nomenclatured as the "Third Intifada," a wave of violence has devastated Israel for the past three weeks.  The primary source for this Palestinian uprising is the ongoing dispute about whether Jews should be allowed to visit and pray at the Temple Mount, a site holy to both Jews and Muslims.
