From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

We couldn't be prouder of our Varsity Soccer Team, the first Yavneh soccer squad to reach the TAPPS State Playoffs!  Through an incredibly exciting game of intense defense and skillful passing, the Bulldogs fell just short of defeating the #1 ranked team in their division, and brought tremendous energy and pride to our campus all season long!

When I speak with parents about their teens, I am often struck by the disparity between their perceptions of their children, and the young men and women we see in our hallways each day.  In short, we tend to see the helpful, cheerful, mature teens that are not always present at home.  Indeed, who among us has not experienced the call from another parent informing them what a terrific guest their child was during a party, sleepover or trip with another family?  While delighted to hear that their child was a model guest, this interaction often gives rise to the exasperated comment, "How come you behave so much better at the Levines?!"

Fortunately, studies have shown that a young person's behavior at school, in public, or at another's home is the best indication of how they will act as an adult - and not the sometimes difficult teen you may confront at home.  In short, psychologists have taught us that home is the place where they can really "let their hair down" and act out in ways they never would in public, or in front of their friends or teachers.

So, have heart, and trust the positive things others tell you about our wonderful students.

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

Dr. P

       College Cues  ~

MOVIE DAY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21

Seniors will be watching  In 500 Words or Less on Wednesday, October 21.  We will watch the movie beginning immediately at 4:20 P.M.  Snacks are being provided by the PTO.
The reviews are incredible; the movie is 95 minutes long.

Going to college is a rite of passage for many American high school students but the process can be overwhelming with college fairs, tours, SATs, applications. And then there's the personal essay.  How does a seventeen-year-old define herself to total strangers when she's only beginning to discover who she really is?  And how can she be expected to do it in an essay of 500 words or less?

In 500 Words or Less takes you on the journey to college with four very different young people as they spend their last year with their families trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be.

In 500 Words or Less serves as a portrait of four of the nearly 1.5 million families who go through this process each year. While race, geography and socio-economic status affected how they got here, their stories converge as they all juggle acceptance, rejection, decision-making and letting go.
