From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

I've been waiting a few years to say this: Mazel Tov to our Varsity Soccer team - they made the playoffs!

As the first Yavneh Soccer team to accomplish this feat, they join our other TAPPS competition teams - Basketball and Volleyball - who have also qualified for playoff spots since we rejoined this statewide private school league.  The decision to rejoin TAPPS in 2013 was motivated by our desire to develop DFW-area rivalries; to allow for team and individual recognition; and to provide game-day schedules that would allow for maximized academic time (with our school day running later than every other school in our district).  To date, all three of these goals - pun intended! - have been accomplished, and we are overjoyed to celebrate our newest Yavneh playoff student-athletes!

As our athletics program continues to grow and transition, we welcomed everyone back to campus this week following a wonderful Sukkot break. One day, following Mincha, I had the opportunity to speak with our students about the challenges that sometimes attend such transitions.  Whether it is the need to get back on a regular sleep schedule, getting used to sitting in class and doing daily work, or reacquainting themselves with proper decorum during prayers, I shared the fact that many of us, adults included, find re-entries to be difficult. So please do what you can do to support our students during the next stretch of the school year, and let us know if we can be helpful to you as we buckle down for the next weeks at Yavneh.

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

Sushi in the Sukkah

On Wednesday, September 30, during our Fall break, Yavneh students joined other Jewish teens for some Sukkot fun at Rabbi and Mrs. Lomner's spacious Sukkah.  They had a fantastic time learning to make their very own sushi rolls while learning more about the Holiday and their Jewish culture.

SENIOR SOCCER NIGHT
IN THE SUKKAH

On Thursday, October 1, the Yavneh Bulldogs Varsity Soccer team played their last season home game against Arlington Burton at UTD. A crowd of over 40 parent and student fans came out to support the team! Following the game, the players, their families as well as Yavneh students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Yavneh Sukkah for a delicious BBQ and special program. Rabbi Tannenbaum gave a wonderful D'var Torah about the connection between soccer and sukkot. Coaches Cameron and Zimmerman and the soccer team leadership honored our Senior soccer players, Max Feist, Jacob Lampert, and Benji Zoller. It was a fabulous celebration of the Yavneh soccer team's most winning season ever and Sukkot!

PSATPRE-ADMINISTRATION OF THE PSAT
PLEASE BE SURE TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR CHILD
On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, sophomores and juniors will be taking the redesigned PSAT. The PSAT/NMSQT is the student's first official step on the road to college. This year students will attend a mandatory pre-administration session in which students will bubble in the information required on the answer sheet. Because the redesigned PSAT is a longer test, this mandatory pre-administration session will allow students ample time on the day of the test to complete the test during the morning session.  All sophomores and juniors taking the Wednesday test must attend the pre-administration session Monday, October 12 during tenth period in order to take the actual test on Wednesday, October 14.  Please make arrangements on that day that your student will  be dismissed at the conclusion of tenth period.

FOR PRE-ADMINISTRATION ONLY
Sophomores  will report to either the Physics Room (801) or the Biology Room (803)  for the pre-administration session. This information will be posted outside the Yavneh office.  Please note that your student will not be testing in these assigned rooms on the day of the test. Juniors will report for the pre-administration to either room 905 or 907. Students will need to bring a number 2 pencil to complete the pre-admininstration information on the answer sheets.  NO MECHANICAL PENCILS can be used for any part of the testing.

IMPORTANT PSAT INFORMATION FOR 10th AND 11th GRADERS
All 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14th, at 8:55 a.m. Students will need to be in their assigned rooms by 8:45 a.m. on that day. Room assignments for the test will be posted on Monday, October 12th.

Be sure to bring the following: two #2 pencils, approved calculator: Math questions can be solved without a calculator; however a scientific or graphing calculator is recommended. Students may not use pocket organizers, laptops and handheld electronic devices, cell phone calculators, or calculators with a QWERTY (typewriter-like ) keypad with paper tape or any that make noise or "talk", or that require an electrical outlet.*** School will NOT provide calculators.

Students will need to turn in their phones, i-watches and other electronic devices and will not have access to these devices during the testing.  Afternoon classes will follow lunch at the regularly scheduled time.

College Representatives at Yavneh

College visits are an integral part of the college search.  Throughout the fall, colleges and university representatives will be on campus to meet with juniors and seniors. Those interested in attending an information session, must present a form signed by the sending teacher as admittance to the information session.  A signature from the instructor is required to attend any information session.
