From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It's hard to believe that it has been fourteen years since that dreadful day in September of 2001. For all of us of a certain age (i.e., adults), we can remember exactly where we were at the time we learned the awful news. For us, it was our generation's November 1963 and the assassination of a young president.

Now consider the fact that many Yavneh freshmen were born in 2001, and therefore have no memory at all of the experience. We who are privileged to teach teenagers every day are often reminded of the quick pace of change. A few weeks ago, I referenced the theory of Growth Mindset.  Each year, Beloit College in Wisconsin publishes a Mindset list of those things incoming college freshmen have always/never known. This year, for our most recent Yavneh graduates, the Class of 2015, that includes: "Hybrid automobiles have always been mass produced ... Google has always been there ... They have never licked a postage stamp." The complete list can be found at https://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2019/

As we prepare for the High Holidays, we have the unique opportunity to reflect on our own past as well as the shorter but no less vivid past of our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. More than anything, perhaps, our Haggim afford us the time and place to stop and reflect on our lives and our connection to the Jewish people. If you have a few minutes and haven't yet seen it, I found the below video from Rabbi Sacks to be particularly profound and moving at this time of year.

From all of us at Yavneh, we wish you and your loved ones a Shana Tova u Metuka, a Happy and Sweet New Year - and Go Bulldogs!

Information Sessions Throughout the Metroplex

Many schools plan fall information sessions within the metroplex. The best way to find out if a college will be here in the Dallas area is to go directly to the college/university website. Register to receive information about that college and they will invite you to any sessions within the area. Let me know if a college is coming and I will forward that information on to the others. Most colleges want to contact the student directly so get on-line and let them know you are interested in their college/university. If there is a school you are particularly interested in, I will see if a rep will be in our area. Meeting and greeting school representatives is very important and can actually help with the admissions process
