From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

A phrase that you will hear me utter frequently is "Senior Leadership."  Indeed, in my more than three decades of experience in schools, I have found that the way our eldest students behave and engage with the school sets the tone of an academic year as much as any program or individual.

This year, we are particularly blessed to have thirty-one terrific senior leaders, each one very much his or her own person. Together they comprise an exceptional group of scholars, artists, athletes, religious leaders and social activists.

What strikes me most so far about this group, whom I've known since they were freshmen, is how positive and community centered they are. Echoing one of my favorite lines from the American classic "You're a Grand Old Flag," this is a group that truly embodies the adage of "never a boast or brag," while at the same time working tirelessly to set a positive example for the school, particularly the younger students who look up to them with deserved admiration and respect.

My senior Government class this week discussed some of the historical background to Labor Day, which we celebrate on Monday.  Recalling the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 and the prominent role of Jewish Americans in the early labor movement and many subsequent reform and civil rights efforts, they join me in wishing you a meaningful Selichot and Labor Day.

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!!

Seniors Enjoy Special Breakfast

On Wednesday morning, our 31 Yavneh seniors enjoyed a special hot breakfast and drinks prepared by Taste of the World and Yiddishe Kup Cafe: breakfast tacos, orange juice and fresh-brewed coffee.  It was a terrific way to start the year with our talented student leadership. Special thanks to Janyce Steinbrecher and Ann Ochstein for their support of the breakfast!

Information Sessions Throughout the Metroplex

Many schools plan fall information sessions within the metroplex. The best way to find out if a college will be here in the Dallas area is to go directly to the college/university website. Register to receive information about that college and they will invite you to any sessions within the area. Let me know if a college is coming and I will forward that information on to the others. Most colleges want to contact the student directly so get on-line and let them know you are interested in their college/university. If there is a school you are particularly interested in, I will see if a rep will be in our area. Meeting and greeting school representatives is very important and can actually help with the admissions process
