From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Two words that have captured our learning community's attention this year are "Flow" and "Mindset." Each has its genesis in the academic field of Psychology, and deepens our understanding of how teenagers work, grow and flourish.

Rabbi Grebenau introduced the idea of "Mindset" to both students and faculty in our opening days of school.  Mindset is a relatively recent insight into human development that informs Education in profound ways. Based on the pioneering work of Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck, social scientists and educators have addressed the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" ways of thinking about students and adults.  In brief, "growth mindset" practitioners (including us at Yavneh) believe that a student's intellectual abilities and coping skills can change and expand given appropriate nurturing and direction. As our students engaged in important goal-setting exercises for the year, this growth-oriented idea was at the front of our minds.
"Flow" was a key part of my introduction to our students and faculty during our beginning-of-year programming.  Growing out of research by University of Chicago psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi on the subject of student and adult engagement (i.e., focus and work on a particular task), the primary qualities of being in a state of Flow are intense focus, loss of a sense of time, no feeling of boredom or distraction, and a real sense of accomplishment.  (Think: musician, athlete, chess player, video gamer or writer who is "in the zone.")  Flow is the result of an appropriate challenge (not too easy or too hard) paired with the right skill level (see chart).  When teachers and students are in a state of Flow, it is the optimal state to which we all aspire.
Last Friday our program focus was primarily on the rules that enable our school community to function at its best - and our students are off to a terrific start.  This week we worked on community building and cross-grade relationships that define the Yavneh Family (see below).

Yashar Koach to all our students and staff on a wonderful first full week!

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!!

Yachad and Yavneh Together

Alumni parent and Yachad Director Terri Rohan visited with our students this morning to kick off another year of a very special partnership between our school and the special needs community across Texas.  Together with student leaders and former volunteers, the Yavneh community pledged to make this year the "biggest and best year yet!"

SpongeBob and Jewish Ethics

Team-building and Jewish morals are two things we take very seriously here at Yavneh.  Our students began their day, following morning Tefilla, with a "trigger" film that has

gone viral on Facebook, showing a group of Jewish teens in LA helping a SpongeBob SquarePants actor who has fallen to the ground after so many others left him  alone, or worse. In groups combining freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, the students grappled with ethical questions regarding the best way to reach out and help another in need.  Following the spiritual themes of Elul and preparing ourselves for the New Year, it was a way for students to interact in an informal educational setting while addressing serious issues of Chesed and Tikkun Olam.

The Yavneh Soccer season is off to a solid start. After an exciting win against Dallas Cambridge this week, in a game that ended in penalty kicks, the team looks forward to a successful season. The players are working hard in the heat to stay hydrated, fit, and above all give that Bulldog effort that makes us all proud!

Our volleyball team has begun its season. Fighting through injuries and a very tough district schedule, our girls have a grit, determination, and amazing effort that makes the school proud every time they take the court. They improve every day and are fantastic!

Go Bulldogs!

Information Sessions Throughout the Metroplex

Many schools plan fall information sessions within the metroplex. The best way to find out if a college will be here in the Dallas area is to go directly to the college/university website. Register to receive information about that college and they will invite you to any sessions within the area. Let me know if a college is coming and I will forward that information on to the others. Most colleges want to contact the student directly so get on-line and let them know you are interested in their college/university. If there is a school you are particularly interested in, I will see if a rep will be in our area. Meeting and greeting school representatives is very important and can actually help with the admissions process
