From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
We've had a terrific start to the 2015-2016 school year!!
Following two very engaging professional days with our faculty meeting together as a Learning Community, our students now have three days under their collective belts. With classes in Judaic and General Studies underway, we've enjoyed orientation activities including intense discussions on "grit" and "growth mindset," as well as practical ways to be the best "Yavneh Citizens" we can be - with a special focus on early morning arrival, davening and appropriate dress code.
We extend a special warm welcome to our new students and their families, and thank the Rubinsteins for hosting new 9th, 10th and 11th graders at their home before the start of school. Thanks also to all the families who attended our new Student-Parent Orientation and Scavenger Hunt as well as the annual Back to School Picnic in Pollman Hall!
As our volleyball and soccer teams prepare for their first games, I also want to remind everyone to focus on the health of our students - including proper sleep, exercise, driving safety and eating - as we re-accustom ourselves to early morning wake-ups, long school days, and homework and other demands. In a word, it's time to "shift gears" and stay healthy!
It's going to be a great year!!
Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!!
--Dr. P

Rabbi Rackovsky Visits

Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky, the new Congregation Shaare Tefilla rabbi, spoke with our students immediately following our first Friday morning davening of the year. He shared his excitement about his recent move to Dallas, as well as a memorable story of injured Israeli soldiers he met last summer during a special rabbinic mission to Be'er Sheva during last summer's Operation Protective Edge in Gaza. He tied the modern-day story to this week's Parsha and the rules about who can and cannot be sent into battle according to Biblical laws, as we embark on an introspective month of Elul. What a great way to start off the school year!

New Student Welcome
One of the hallmarks of a Yavneh education is the opportunity for students to learn leadership skills that will help them in college and beyond. It is always amazing to watch our students leading a new crop of Yavneh students! This past week, several Yavneh upper-class students took the lead by engaging and mentoring new Yavneh 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students at both a new student welcome party at the Rubinsteins' home and by leading them in a scavenger hunt at orientation in preparation for their first day of school. Grounded in their identity, Yavneh students know who they are and are comfortable in their own skin. The excitement, energy, and love for their school that our students exhibit on a daily basis and the kindness, humility, and passion that they bring, as student leaders, to their peers are inspirational traits to all of us privileged to learn and live in this unique environment!

Meeting for Senior Parents
Seniors are well on their way in planning their lives after high school. The senior year is a time to apply for various post-secondary opportunities. Please join Mrs. Schmucker for the step-by-step guide through the application process on Tuesday, August 25. There is a method to the process required of seniors, all of which will be explained in detail. Seniors and parents are invited to attend the meeting which will be in the library at 7:00 P.M. All questions will be answered so that each of you feels you understand the application process.
Rescheduled Writing Workshop for Seniors
Katie Frink, Regional Director of Rhodes College has rescheduled the essay writing workshop for all seniors on Wednesday, August 26. The workshop will begin promptly at 4:24 p.m. which is our scheduled senior seminar class time. We will all meet in the library for the workshop which will run approximately an hour and will be packed with invaluable information. Please plan accordingly.
I believe this workshop will provide you with detailed information for writing that "wow" essay. Her enthusiasm and expertise are invaluable and come at a critical time as you begin your senior year. This will be a great way to kick start the application process and senior seminar!
College Representatives at Yavneh
College visits are an integral part of the college search. Throughout the fall, colleges and university representatives will be on campus to meet with juniors and seniors. Those interested in attending an information session, must present a form signed by the sending teacher as admittance to the information session. A signature from the instructor is required to attend any information session.

Information Sessions Throughout the Metroplex
Many schools plan fall information sessions within the metroplex. The best way to find out if a college will be here in the Dallas area is to go directly to the college/university website. Register to receive information about that college and they will invite you to any sessions within the area. Let me know if a college is coming and I will forward that information on to the others. Most colleges want to contact the student directly so get on-line and let them know you are interested in their college/university. If there is a school you are particularly interested in, I will see if a rep will be in our area. Meeting and greeting school representatives is very important and can actually help with the admissions process
