From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

The dramatic contrast of emotions attending the transition between Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut reflects the depth of feelings we share in our heartfelt connection to the State and People of Israel.  Indeed, this mixture of emotions is essential to our understanding of what it means to be Jewish, and is an important learning experience for our students.

This past week, we hosted special visitors who enhanced our commemoration and celebration of these days.  On Yom Hazikaron, Leah Crosby shared her personal story of being a young Israeli traveling in Australia when the Israeli Army (in pre-cell phone times) tracked her down to return home in the wake of her brother-soldier's untimely death.  She spoke movingly about how the State took care of her and her family at such a difficult time.

The next day, our great friend and Yavneh grandparent Eli Davidsohn both charmed and energized our high schoolers, leading us through "Israel: The Musical" on his famous accordion.  Eli serves as a Schultz Family Israel Educator Fellow, and is a wonderful ambassador for Israel throughout our Jewish community.

Nearly eight thousand miles away, our Yavneh seniors have been relishing their week in Israel - the second week of their March of the Living experience - and we look forward to welcoming them home on Sunday!

Shabbat Shalom, and Am Yisrael Chai!

Dr. P
