From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Shakespeare's famous quip that "all the world's a stage" rang brilliantly true this week on Merit Drive, as our stalwart thespians performed Sherlock Holmes: Hound of the Baskervilles. With some gender-bending updates to the 1902 original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, audiences were treated to the wit, wisdom and mystery of our terrific female leads, Shirlee Holmes and Jenny Watson, together with terrific supporting characters. Yashar Koach to Director Michael Federico and the entire cast and crew!
Yavneh's connections to Israel were strengthened as we welcomed former Israeli paratrooper Ariel Siman Tov to our Hebrew classes. He spoke about the importance of staying knowledgeable about current events in Israel, and shared stories about lone soldiers, Jewish DNA and the fact that teenagers are "capable of more than you think." Special thanks to Jeff and Summer Pailet for hosting Ariel and bringing him to Yavneh!
Finally, we welcomed home a true group of heroes: Rabbi Lomner and a crew of dedicated student-athlete runners who participated in the Jerusalem Marathon to benefit special needs in Israel (see story below). The pride we felt at welcoming them home was fantastic!
In short, it was another great week of learning, growth and Jewish pride and connection. My deepest thanks to each of you for your support of Yavneh!
Shabbat Shalom,
Dr. P

Yavneh Students Experience the Israeli Election
Hebrew classes at Yavneh are always aiming to enhance the student connection with the State of Israel. So, it was only necessary that this week, being it was the elections in Israel, to have a mock election in class. Students learned about various parties, and then taught the rest of the class about their respective party, specifically who they are, what they stand for, and where they see Israel in the future. In addition, we discussed the pros and cons of the Israeli political system, specifically some solutions we had to make it better. To conclude, we were even able to cast our own votes; similar to in Israel, the Likud won.

I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about politics. For some reason, I have never become overly interested with the American elections and political system. Yet the Israeli elections caught my attention. I feel like the controversial matters being discussed will directly affect my brothers and sisters living in Israel. In Hebrew class this past week, we had the opportunity to not just learn about the elections but actually re-enact them ourselves. Through the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Bracha, we combined several classes together and held mock elections. Every group represented a different political party, and presented why we should vote for their specific group to have seats in the Knesset. It was extremely interesting to learn all about the different parties, how many seats they hold in Knesset, and what their political views are. I think this was a great opportunity to learn about Israel and become educated as part of the next generation of Jewish leaders, and I would like it if Yavneh had more sessions like this in the future.

JFS KLEIN INTERN PROGRAM
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 30
Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas provides the opportunity for local teens to intern at one of the Greater Dallas area's many nonprofit organizations. Designed as a tribute to the late Rabbi Klein of Temple Emanu-El, this internship celebrates the passion and commitment to the issues of social justice.
The six-month program (from interview to completion)
is designed to help participants gain knowledge of nonprofit management through the following core competencies: direct service, philanthropy, advocacy, community organizing and social entrepreneurship. At the end of a six week internship (with a participating nonprofit agency), interns will work with community advisors and apply their new knowledge to a self-directed community project. At the end of the internship, participants will receive a certificate of nonprofit management. Please click here for more information.
