From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

We at Yavneh found ourselves, once again, at the center of Jewish life in Dallas this week as we welcomed Rabbi Israel Meir Lau to campus. It is indeed a blessing to host our fellow day schools on our extraordinary Schultz Rosenberg Campus, and Rabbi Lau's compelling message that day school education is critical to Jewish continuity resonated with every student, parent and supporter who attended his addresses here at Yavneh and later that evening at the Night to Celebrate Jewish Education.

I was also fortunate to attend the North American Jewish Day School Conference in Philadelphia, where more than a thousand day school leaders, professional and lay alike, learned together from a rich array of professors, expert consultants and colleagues on topics ranging from board leadership to twenty-first century technology and learning.

We also learned of some terrific awards for both our journalism program and our boys' varsity basketball team (see below).  On top of our recent math competition victory and continued acceptances from colleges and universities around the country, it has been an exceptional week for which we are grateful.

In all, it was a week of tremendous learning, growth and Jewish pride and connection. My deepest thanks to each of you for your support of Yavneh!

Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P

Welcome Rabbi Lau!

Yavneh welcomed former Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, to campus this week. Students and teachers from Akiba, Levine, Torah Day and Mesora joined Yavneh students, faculty, and staff in Pollman Hall to listen to Rabbi Lau's stories of his personal experience as a child survivor of Buchenwald concentration camp and his subsequent journey to Israel. Rabbi Lau also spoke to over 800 members of the community at "A Night to Celebrate Jewish Education," honoring Frank and Helen Risch, grandparents of Aaron Minsky '17, sponsored by the Center for Jewish Education (CJE) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas.  Rabbi Lau emphasized the importance of Jewish education and praised the efforts of all of the Jewish schools in the Dallas community.

Born in Poland, Rabbi Lau lost most of his family in the Holocaust. He was liberated by American forces in Buchenwald at age eight and made aliyah shortly thereafter. Rabbi Lau has served as Chief Rabbi of several cities in Israel and is currently Chair of the Yad Vashem Council. He speaks around the world about the memory of the Holocaust. Hundreds of Yavneh alumni have been fortunate to hear Rabbi Lau speak at Auschwitz during the March of the Living experience. We were honored to welcome Rabbi Lau to Dallas and to the Schultz Rosenberg campus!
