From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

 Dear Yavneh Family,

When we say that a Yavneh education prepares students for success in life, that message is best realized when our teens practice the values they are taught in school.

There are few things Yavneh students do better than celebrate one another's accomplishments.  From college admissions to athletic victories, from community service achievements to artistic triumphs, our students recognize the importance of mutual support as a core value of their Jewish faith.   (They also band together beautifully in the face of adversity.  These are menschlich kids.)

This week presented an opportunity for such celebration, as senior Macy Golman formally committed to playing Women's Varsity Soccer at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.  An outstanding student-athlete, Macy follows celebrated Yavneh alumni Itzy Ribald '03 (Yeshiva University Men's Basketball), Gavi Wolk '03 (Yeshiva University Men's Basketball), and Emily Rohan '12 (Stern College/Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball) as Yavneh graduates who have continued their athletic careers.

Macy's celebration this week included teachers, coaches, rabbis, and family members, but the greatest energy of the day came from her classmates and friends (see photo).  Click hereto see my remarks.  It was a delicious Yavneh moment indeed!

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

Dr. P

Tu B'Shevat

Yavneh students celebrated the holiday of Tu Bishvat (New Year for the Trees), on Wednesday, the 15th of the month of Shevat by participating in several activities in their Hebrew classes. Tu Bishvat has enjoyed a revival in recent years as a holiday that links Jews with the land of Israel and as a Jewish celebration of the environment. This week, students tasted the seven species, or types of fruits and grains named in the Torah (Deuteronomy

8:8) as the main produce of the land of Israel. Deuteronomy 8:8 tells us that Israel was "a land of wheat, barley, grapevines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of oil olives and date honey." In ancient times, these foods were staples of the Israelite diet. Theywere also important in the ancient Jewish religion because one of the Temple tithes derived from these seven foods. The tithe was called the bikkurim, which meant "first fruits." Yavneh students also read Hebrew poetry related to the holiday and focused on the importance of planting a seed for the next generation.

Judge Butler Visits With Students

Nationally acclaimed motivational speaker Judge Dan Butler shared his wisdom, energy and unforgettable anecdotes with a highly attentive audience of Yavneh students and staff following Shacharit prayers this morning.  The judge's stories of leading youth group shabbatonim, his reflections on this week's parsha, and his touching stories of his own family's "never giving up" all tied to the first commandment and were filled with funny and emotional moments that our school community will long remember. Judge Butler is in Dallas as Congregation Shaare Tefilla's Scholar in Residence, and was scheduled to deliver this week's Pollman Lecture, which was cancelled due to inclement weather delays.

On Friday February 13th, the Yavneh Mathematics department is proud to be sponsoring a field trip for students to the Texas A&M Commerce Adventures in Mathematics (AIM). AIM is an annual event organized by the University's Department of Mathematics  for high school math teachers and their students. They will be involved in hands on activities in math, listen to talks on math careers, watch planetarium shows and tour the campus.  This field trip will provide a valuable, out-of-classroom learning experience for Yavneh students. Students should return signed permission to forms to either their math teacher, or to the front desk.  Click here for more information about the workshop.

Israel Advocacy Class

Yavneh continues to offer a class on Israel Advocacy on Sunday evenings from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on campus.  The class is taught by Naomi Schrager and is appropriate for 9th through 11th graders.  The third part of this five-week course will be this Sunday, February 8th.  The course is following the David Project curriculum and covers history of the Arab Israeli conflict, the importance of the American Israeli partnership and effective models of advocacy.  Please email naomischrager@gmail.com to sign up or if you have any questions.  We hope to see you there!

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some  are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org  or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.
