From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

There are times in our lives that we sense we are part of history.  This week's campus visit by recently-freed Cuban prisoner Alan Gross was one such time for the students and teachers of Yavneh Academy.

In my more than thirty years as an educator, I cannot recall a single experience that touched me as deeply as Mr. Gross's visit with our students. (He is pictured here with his grand-nephew Noah Rubinstein '17).  Perhaps it was the national, indeed international, nature of the visitor, who just last week sat beside Mrs. Obama at the State of the Union Address.  In terms of American History - my first academic love - here was an individual who personified our two countries' difficult past and promising future.

Or perhaps it was the deeply personal connection of Mr. Gross to our Dallas Jewish Community, having stood shoulder-to-shoulder in support of the Rubinstein family these past five years.  Or perhaps it was the enthusiastic singing and prayers, led by Rabbis Tannenbaum and Lomner, with the voices of our teenagers filling the sun-drenched Beit Midrash in gratitude, joy and hope.  Following our daily afternoon Mincha prayer service, Mr. Gross shared the history of his assignment, arrest and captivity, then welcomed our students' questions, which ranged from the political (U.S. - Cuba relations) to the personal ("How did you get through each day?"), and finished by thanking us for our loyal support of him and his family.   As Mr. Rapps shared with me, "His humility is something that I will long remember."

And long remember this week at Yavneh we all will.  It was, in a word, historic.

Shabbat Shalom and Go Bulldogs!

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some  are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org  or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.

Knock Knock Give a Sock is a non for profit organization that asks people to donate socks to the homeless. This was created by a Jewish college student at NYU. She created this organization because she realized many homeless people suffer in the winter with sicknesses, because they are not kept warm. However, she realized if a lot of people donate socks around the country to the homeless,
less will get sick. Anna Wernick contacted the student to start collecting socks at Yavneh Academy and people will be asked to bring socks to the Helping Hands for the Homeless dinner. Please bring in socks, new or old, just NO HOLES! The more we collect the better we keep people warm!! A box is located outside of the office to donate the socks. At the end of the month we will be donating all of the socks to Austin Street Shelter.
