From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

As we commiserate with the Jewish communities in Paris and around the world, we continue to teach our students about the unique role the modern State of Israel plays in all our lives.

This week we unveiled the newest addition to our campus art collection: a mixed media representation of the birth of the State of Israel, commissioned by Mr. Dembo and painted by Mrs. Ribald (see photo).  It is a beautiful interdisciplinary project (Jewish History and Art) that serves as a model for our students' work, and features images of the Holocaust, the Mediterranean Sea and important Israeli leaders as well as the greater Jewish populace.

Starting next Sunday (January 25), Mrs. Schrager will be offering a five-part special course on Israel Advocacy, based on the David Project curriculum, covering the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the importance of the American-Israeli partnership and effective models of advocacy for high school and college students.  See below for more detailed information on this important initiative.

Also: Please check out our early college acceptances below.  The diverse list of colleges and programs reflects the diversity of our students' interests and talents, and we are grateful to Mrs. Schmucker for guiding our seniors through this often-intense time of transition.

And this just in: We are hearing lots of good news from our basketball teams, with all three squads bringing home wins from Irving last night, including a last-second win by the girls at the final buzzer! Our boys varsity is currently ranked #10 in the state for small private schools.

On behalf of all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom!

-Dr. P

Winter Arts Night

Pollman Hall was filled with creative energy on Wednesday as the Yavneh Arts Department displayed its work.  A large audience of students, parents and guests from the community enjoyed an exhibit of work from Monica Ribald's visual art classes, poetry from Lisa Huffaker's Creative Writing classes, and compositions from Kim Corbet's music class.  A selection of short films from Ari Dembo's new Video Production class was especially well-received.   This was the first Yavneh Arts event of the year-stay tuned for announcements of more events in the very near future!

Prospective Parent Coffee

We hosted a Prospective Parent Coffee on Wednesday, January 14 for 7th and 8th grade parents who had not yet visited Yavneh or who were interested in finding out more about the school. Thirty-five people attended, including prospective parents, current parents and several Yavneh alumni. A panel of faculty and staff spoke about the school, focusing on academics, extracurriculars, and the college selection process. There was much discussion amongst the group with a range of questions from parents about curriculum, college, and the overall high school experience. The highlight of the program was having our alumni with us to share their experiences as graduates of the school.

Jori Epstein '12 spoke about how well prepared she

was at Yavneh for college, on many levels, and how she has further cultivated the leadership skills she developed at Yavneh, including an upcoming internship in New York at Sports Illustrated magazine this semester. Other alumni present included Shanee Abouzaglo '14, Jason Epstein '14, Jared Katz '11, Justin Katz '13, and Dalya Romaner '14 - each lending their own unique insights to the conversation. Thanks to the recruitment committee - Gianina Abouzaglo, Dia Epstein, Debbie Katz, Shani Romick, Dafna Rubinstein and Sheryl Wernick - for all of their help in making this happen!

Israel Advocacy Class Starts Next Sunday

Yavneh will be offering a five-part class on Israel Advocacy on Sunday evenings from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on campus.  Classes will be taught by Naomi Schrager and are appropriate for 9th through 11th graders.  The first class will be on Sunday,  January 25th.  The course will follow the David Project curriculum and will cover the history of the Arab Israeli conflict, the importance of the American Israeli partnership and effective models of advocacy.  Please email naomischrager@gmail.com to sign up or if you have any questions.  We hope to see you there!

Knock Knock Give a Sock is a non for profit organization that asks people to donate socks to the homeless. This was created by a Jewish college student at NYU. She created this organization because she realized many homeless people suffer in the winter with sicknesses, because they are not kept warm. However, she realized if a lot of people donate socks around the country to the homeless,
less will get sick. Anna Wernick contacted the student to start collecting socks at Yavneh Academy and people will be asked to bring socks to the Helping Hands for the Homeless dinner. Please bring in socks, new or old, just NO HOLES! The more we collect the better we keep people warm!! A box is located outside of the office to donate the socks. At the end of the month we will be donating all of the socks to Austin Street Shelter.
