From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Welcome back! Our students and teachers returned to campus this week with renewed energy and commitment to their classes and activities. Despite
the tremors from local earthquakes and the cold weather, we all returned ready to take on the challenges of the second semester. We have much to look forward to this term, including an exciting Mock Trial season, Israel Advocacy training (check out Mrs. Schrager's 5-week course), new Math competitions, students participating in the Jerusalem Marathon, and others. Stay tuned to our weekly Etone for updates, photos, etc. As we head into Shabbat, we join with Jews around the globe in support of the families in Paris, France. We recited tehillim (psalms) during our morning services as a school community, and pray for comfort and healing. On behalf of all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a happy and healthy 2015 and Shabbat Shalom! -Dr. P

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.

Knock Knock Give a Sock is a non for profit organization that asks people to donate socks to the homeless. This was created by a Jewish college student at NYU. She created this organization because she realized many homeless people suffer in the winter with sicknesses, because they are not kept warm. However, she realized if a lot of people donate socks around the country to the homeless, the less will get sick. Anna Wernick contacted the student to start collecting socks at Yavneh Academy and people will be asked to bring socks to the Helping Hands for the Homeless dinner. Please bring in socks, new or old, just NO HOLES! The more we collect the better we keep people warm!! A box is located outside of the office to donate the socks. At the end of the month we will be donating all of the socks to Austin Street Shelter.
