From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Finishing exams while still celebrating Chanukah is the way to head into Winter Break, or so I am told by a number of well-informed Yavneh students who are not shy about sharing their ideas with me. Indeed, the timing of the end of semester with nearly a week of Chanukah to celebrate has set a wonderful tone around our campus.
As a classroom teacher (consider the origin of the term "head master"), I was kvelling as my twelfth-grade students completed their mid-year exams in Government and Law this week. On the faces of varsity captains, newspaper editors, student government leaders and club presidents, I witnessed tremendous intellectual focus and attention to detail and complex ideas. Beyond their academic maturity, this is a senior class renowned for the kindness and middot they share on a daily basis with teachers, rabbis, with one another, and perhaps most important, with the underclassmen here in the school.
We are in the midst of recruiting our new ninth grade class for next year, and if you know of any prospective Yavneh students, including ones who would enter grade ten or eleven, would you please click here to let us know?
As we head into Winter Break for well-deserved rest and rejuvenation, I wish you some great "down-time" together with your families and loved ones.
Our special Mazel Tov goes out to the Rubinstein family on the return of their beloved uncle Alan Gross to U.S. soil!
On behalf of my faculty colleagues, and all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Happy Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom!
-Dr. P

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.

Drop off submissions in the box on the YAD display by the art room, or email them to Cassie Gross (cassiegross2@gmail.com). If your art is too large, take a picture of it and turn that in or just leave it in Dr. Cloward's office. Also, if you are stuck for an idea, make sure to check out the prompts on the display downstairs!
