From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It warms my heart to see our students engaged in their studies and exam preparations this time of year.  We speak often of Yavneh's mission, part of which is to prepare students for "college and university distinction," and this bi-annual experience is one such way that goal is achieved.  College acceptances for the Class of 2015 - this year's senior class - have begun to roll in, and will be summarized in an upcoming Etone.

We were honored this week with a special visit from a group of IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldiers and retired officers (see below), reaffirming Yavneh's strong ties to the State, People and Land of Israel.  Our campus is indeed a center of U.S.-Israel cooperation and commitment.  Special thanks to our student ambassadors for serving as hosts and tour guides to our visiting dignitaries!

At this miraculous time of Chanukah, we are reminded of the possibilities that await our maturing, hard-working and compassionate Yavneh students.  We could not be prouder of our students and the ways they work and interact with one another and the adults in their lives.  It is truly a blessing to be a part of this school community.

From our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom, and Happy Hanukkah!

-Dr. P

Yavneh Students Support IDF

On Wednesday, the entire Yavneh student body honored visiting IDF soldiers in a community event on campus that included stirring videos and testimonials from a number of active and retired IDF soldiers, including a "lone soldier" officer who grew up in the U.S.  Smaller groups of students had the opportunity to speak directly to the officers as well. Through their stories and slides, the soldiers were able to convey the complexity and necessity of their role protecting the State of Israel, and by extension, the entire Jewish community.  Many thanks to the FIDF for bringing this outstanding program to Yavneh!

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some  are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org  or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.
