From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
It was wonderful seeing so many alumni - and alumni parents - at our Thanksgiving games and reception. Watching them reconnect with teachers, coaches and rabbis - and with each other - was a heartwarming sight. Special thanks to Brittney Herson '09 and Brad Alhadef '08 for their leadership on these events!
The campus is feeling a bit quieter with both our Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams at the Beth Tfiloh Weiner Tournament and Shabbaton in Baltimore (my home town and old school). The reports I am getting from friends and colleagues in Maryland - host families, teachers and principals - is that our student-athletes are comporting themselves in the menschlich ways their families and we at Yavneh try to teach and mold them each day. (Yes, that's a photo of them studying in Baltimore!)
The rest of us are here on campus getting ready to begin our semester exams. We have spoken with our students about the importance of time management and self-care at this busy time. Feel free to ask any Yavneh student what the SAS Theorem of exam preparation is (hint: it involves lots of rest and healthy imbibing). Thanks for your support of our kids at this often-stressful time of year.
Shabbat Shalom- and Go Bulldogs!
-Dr. P

Alumni Reunion: Basketball Games and Reception
Over 100 people attended the events at the Yavneh Alumni Reunion on Wednesday, November 26th! Alumni participated in what has become a tradition-- mens and women's basketball games-- with stands full of spectators, including fellow alumni, parents, and current Yavneh students, who also served as referees for the games. Brad Alhadef '08 organized the games again this year. After the games, alumni attended a special, first-of-its-kind reception with sushi and sliders catered by A Taste of the World. A number of alumni from a variety of classes, ranging from 2003-2013, returned to campus for the festivities. Brittney Herson '09, who helped coordinate the reception, reflects on the Yavneh experience: "Part of what makes Yavneh so unique is the spanning of relationships across grade levels and age groups. This year we were able to all come together to help plan and celebrate our alma mater. I had a great time catching up with old friends and meeting new alumni. We shared delicious food and drinks, reminisced about our high school days, and kicked off the Thanksgiving weekend with a bang."

If your art is too large, take a picture of it and turn that in or just leave it in Dr. Cloward's office. COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION
In a blink of an eye, your student will be looking back on high school ready to take the next big step toward adulthood. With soaring costs of college, post-secondary planning is critical in high school. On Monday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the library, junior parents are invited to attend a College Information Session. Learn about the college guidance program at Yavneh and the step by step process your students will be going through. Mrs. Schmucker will be available to answer all and every question you might have as your student begins exploring possibilities beyond high school.
LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.
