From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
As we approach Thanksgiving, we are proud to feature a number of our outstanding Yavneh Alumni in this week's Etone!
With accomplishments ranging from collegiate athletic and academic recognition, to Israel and overseas service, to successful career and family lives (including a NY Marathon finisher), we are kvelling at the range of achievements our graduates continue to compile as they combine rich lives and careers informed and enriched by Jewish values and engagement.
We are looking forward to greeting many alumni-as well as alumni parents-next Wednesday evening at the alumni women's and men's basketball games. This year, we will be holding a special reception for alumni after the games( see Yavneh Alumni Reunion below). We are excited to see so many alumni here on Merit Drive!
We are also excited about our on-campus Shabbaton this week. It promises to be a time of spiritual reflection, bonding and the kind of intense Jewish living that only a Yavneh high school education can provide.
P.S. A bunch of us had a great time at the JCC "J's Got Talent" event last weekend. If you haven't yet seen the video, check it out below.
Shabbat Shalom, Happy Thanksgiving and Go Bulldogs!
-Dr. P

Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit
November 16-18, 2014
Each year, AIPAC partners with select Jewish Day Schools, synagogues, national youth groups and teen leadership organizations to bring 400 student leaders from across the country to Washington, D.C. for Israel advocacy and political activism training. Through AIPAC's Schusterman Advocacy Institute High School Summit, AIPAC identifies and mentors high school students committed to strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship through the American political process. This year, Yavneh was proud to have Aaron Minsky '17 and Jonathan Nurko '17 travel with Mrs. Naomi Schrager to attend the summit. Mrs. Schrager said "It was a pleasure accompanying Jonathan and Aaron to the AIPAC high school summit this past week. AIPAC did an incredible job of training and educating the students to become effective advocates for Israel. The summit culminated with a lobbying session on Capitol Hill where we met with Pete Sessions."

Rachael Abrams '07 Rachael Abrams '07, alumna and Yavneh Academy faculty member, completed running the New York Marathon earlier this month on November 2nd. She said, "I have a love affair with New York so enduring the pain and cold winds did not deter me as I ran through all five boroughs. After training for six months, crossing that finish line was the best feeling ever - even with a strained foot and frozen fingers. I am officially a marathoner. "
Brittany Barnett '11
Brittany Barnett '11 is currently volunteering with Global Brigades at NYU and is traveling to Honduras this winter to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. This entailed participation in a 60 hour training course over a period of a little more than a week and then taking both a written exam followed by an oral exam in Hebrew. Adam started work in the program on Sunday, November 2, and will be working out of Tel Aviv.

Israel Advocacy Club Update
Palestinian Attack on Jerusalem Synagogue
On Tuesday, November 18th, men and rabbis attended their local synagogue for morning prayers. At 7 A.M. two Palestinian men armed with guns, knives, and axes entered the synagogue. Tragically, four rabbis were murdered and seven other men were severely injured. Shortly after the attack the Israeli police responded and killed the two terrorists in a gun battle. This was the deadliest attack in the west Jerusalem area since 2008. Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu blamed Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority for the attack. Even though Mahmoud Abbas disapproved of the attack, Netanyahu says Abbas is not doing anything to change the mindset of his people.
Israel's Soccer Triumph
Israel beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 in the 2016
Euro Cup qualifiers. Along with Israel's wins over Andorra and Cyprus, the win on Sunday has sent the team to the top of its group's ranking.

Responding to Ebola
Following the US and other countries, Israel has allocated over $300,000 to help combat the spread of Ebola. Israeli non-governmental organizations have
started to send medical and emergency equipment to the most affected countries. A team of Israeli doctors has been sent to surrounding African countries to assist in emergencies and prevention. Additionally, organizations are building clinics and training the local population.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship process is open for the 2015-2016 school year. The DJCF awards at least 35 college scholarships each year based on financial need, academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 and while some are university specific, most allow study at the college or university of the recipient's choice. We have specific awards for students studying medicine, law, education, fashion merchandising, or Jewish studies and we have a host of scholarships that are for students in any field of study. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Fortunately only one application is needed for the myriad of scholarships since questions are designed to allow us to consider an applicant for every scholarship for which he/she may be eligible. Eligibility requirements and the application can be found at www.djcf.org. If you have any questions, please contact scholarships@djcf.org or 214-615-5268.The application process closes on February 17, 2015.
