From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Question: How can you tell if you're a student at Yavneh Academy?

Answer: One day you are learning about Kristallnacht, that awful night of broken glass that is widely considered the prologue to the Holocaust - and the next day you are joining with your classmates,

teachers and rabbis praying for the safety of American Veterans and soldiers on current duty.  In short, you are both a fully-identified and committed Jew, and also a loyal and grateful American.

Question: How do you feel about being a student at Yavneh?

Answer: Judging by the presentations of our Student Ambassadors as they welcomed the entire 8th grade classes from Akiba and Levine Academies this week, pretty proud and excited.  We had awesome visits from many of our future Yavneh freshmen this week, and look forward to welcoming them for full-day individual visits in the upcoming weeks!

Keep warm, Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

-Dr. P

Tenenhaus Gift to Senior Class

The entire school community was thrilled to welcome Morti and Ora Tenenhaus to our Beit Midrash this morning ("the warmest place in Dallas," according to Head of School Dr. Portnoy). Following a poignant introduction by Mrs. Schrager, Mr. Tenenhaus shared insights into this week's parsha, emphasizing the idea that to be "a stranger and a resident" has both challenges and disadvantages. Yavneh seniors were privileged to receive a copy of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' important book "A Letter in the Scroll: Understanding Our Jewish Identity and Exploring the Legacy of the World's Oldest Religion," which Rabbi Tannenbaum implored them to cherish.  Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Tenenhaus, for spending time with us - and for the gift of the books!

Yavneh Students Honor Veterans Day

On Tuesday, November 11, Yavneh students gathered to commemorate and honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.  Through video presentations and a student-led reading highlighting the origins of the day in 1919 (then known as Armistice Day) as well as current statistics, students from all grades

 shared important information

about U.S. Veterans protecting the safety of our great land and peoples around the world.  Following the videos and readings, students composed thank-you cards to veterans expressing their gratitude and respect. At Mincha, Rabbi Tannenbaum led the community in a prayer for the safety of our American military forces.  Yashar Koach to Student Government Co-Presidents Serina Romick '15 and Erin Wernick '15, as well as all the students who participated!

Visits from Akiba and Levine Academies

This week, Yavneh hosted the entire 8th grade classes from Akiba Academy and Levine
school by interacting with Yavneh students, faculty and administrators across a range of learning, social and culinary activities (i.e., eating a delicious Yavneh hot lunch).  Yavneh student ambassadors led highly interactive and engaging
activities with the prospective students and  Academy, our two main feeder schools. The middle school "seniors" got a taste of high shared their experiences at Yavneh of transitioning to high school, and highlighting the academics, athletics, Tikkun Olam and other extra-curriculars.  We are looking forward to individual student visits from these two fine schools, and from students in other middle schools, in the upcoming weeks!

          Israel Advocacy Club Update

Recently, naval smuggling passages have become popular for trying to bring arms into the Gaza Strip. The Israelis are constantly monitoring these areas due to the threat it poses. These ships usually load cargo in Egypt before traveling to Gaza. Israeli forces plan to keep safe passage for non-violent ships carrying goods in their attempt to stop smugglers. The Israeli Navy fired on two ships this week, and boarded another vessel . The Israelis will continue to monitor this area closely hoping to neutralize the threat.

On Monday, a woman and an IDF soldier were killed in two different stabbing attacks. Dalia Lemkus (25) was attacked in the West Bank and Sgt. Almog Shilony (20) was attacked in Tel-Aviv. Three others were wounded in the West Bank attack but the assailants were neutralized.
