From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It was thrilling for so many of our students to participate in the 2014 AIPAC National Summit in Dallas this past week (see below).  Yavneh's connection to the State of Israel and its people is at the core of our mission. I am proud that our Israel Advocacy Club is bursting with energy and activity, and that their updates have become a regular student-produced part of our weekly Etone.

This past week also included a highlight of our Admissions effort, the annual Yavneh Open House.  Prospective students, parents and a number of grandparents had the opportunity to tour our fabulous campus, and to meet and speak with Yavneh students, teachers and parents.  It was a wonderful day, and if you know of any prospective students who would be a good fit for Yavneh, please let us know.

Our basketball teams are off to a strong start.  Many thanks to the fans who packed the Schultz Family Gym this week to cheer on our boys' and girls' teams at the start of what promises to be an exciting season.

Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!

-Dr. P

Rabbi Mechanic Visits Yavneh

Rabbi Daniel Mechanic visited the Yavneh campus from New York on Wednesday morning, and shared many stories and insights with our high school students.  Rabbi Mechanic is the Founder and Director of Project Chazon in New York City, which focuses particularly on inter-religious issues, including how to address missionizing efforts by other faiths.  The students and faculty found Rabbi Mechanic to be a dynamic and engaging visitor.  Many thanks to Rabbi Tannenbaum for organizing the visit.

Sharing the Yavneh Experience

Over 100 people attended the Yavneh Open House on Sunday, November 2nd. Prospective families learned from faculty and staff about academics, extracurricular activities, and college and toured the campus with Yavneh students. In his remarks to the crowd, Amitai Abouzaglo '16 spoke about his "epiphany" that Yavneh is more than a school-"it's a lifestyle." He emphasized the passion and commitment of Yavneh students and the sense of community that permeates the campus. There was a true feeling of community as we welcomed many families from Akiba, Levine, public and other private schools to our campus.

Thank you to all our student and parent volunteers who helped make this such a wonderful event.  In the coming weeks, students will return on their own to spend a day visiting Yavneh. If you know of any students who might be interested in attending Yavneh, please be in touch with Mimi Zimmerman, Director of Admissions at 214-295-3500 or mzimmerman@yavnehdallas.org.

Jerusalem Terror Attack

A member of Hamas has committed the second terror attack in Jerusalem in the last two weeks. On Wednesday, he used a car to hit civilians in cars and on the sidewalk. He then exited the car and proceeded to attack police officers and pedestrians until he was shot and killed. A Druze police officer was killed and 14 others were injured. Hamas made a statement saying the attack was in retaliation for Israel's response to Palestinian riots in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

AIPAC National Summit

Dallas was fortunate to host AIPAC's annual National Summit in downtown this past Sunday and Monday. The National Summit educated attendees on current Israeli and American affairs and also celebrated Israel's advancements in technology, medicine, arts, and various fields. Speakers included former IDF Chief of Defense Intelligence, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Amos Yadlin, a pilot who destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor in Operation Opera and Alon Ben-Gurion, the grandson of David Ben-Gurion.
