From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
The transition from Yom Kippur to Sukkot is always an exciting one. As we move from the serious and self-reflective nature of the High Holidays to the joyous celebrations of the outdoor-centered festival, we engage our teens and ourselves in a very adult, thoughtful process as we "shift gears" from one holiday to the other.
As I shared with the students this week, we at Yavneh are blessed to have a school schedule that accommodates and encourages full participation in the holidays that most Jewish teenagers do not enjoy. Here at Yavneh, as I often like to say, we are a "both-and" culture, where Jewish life and academic rigor co-exist, and reinforce one another in the rich fabric of our Jewish day school.
I also shared the fact that "the eyes of the world" are once again on Dallas as the worldwide community comes to grips with the Ebola outbreak. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those suffering, whether here in Dallas or around the globe, as we Jews feel a special obligation to help those in need in keeping with our commitment to Tikkun Olam, to repairing the world around us.
Chag Sukkot Sameach (Happy Sukkot Holiday),
Shabbat Shalom and Go Bulldogs!

High Holidays 5775
Rosh Hashana & Erev Yom Kippur
This time of year is always incredibly busy and hectic. With all of the meal planning, inviting guests, cleaning the house and other preparations, we sometimes lose sight of the larger picture. At Yavneh, we always try to prepare for the holidays in a meaningful and appropriate way. We break from our usual class schedule and come together as a school for some experiential and out of class learning. Before Rosh Hashana, Rabbi Tannenbaum led a program in which students learned the verses from the Musaf service and endeavored to understand their deeper meaning and significance.
On Erev Yom Kippur, Mrs. Schrager and Mrs. Rosensweig led a program based on the selichot prayers. There is a section at the end of selichot when we list different characters from Jewish History who called upon God in times of distress. We try to channel their experiences and relate to them. The seniors acted out some of the scenes from this prayer for our students. Students then personalized this list by adding other moments from Jewish history where Jews called to Hashem and were answered. Finally, each individual student spent a few moments reflecting on times in their own lives when they have called on God.
Our hope is that these programs helped our students to prepare for the High Holidays in a reflective and personal way.
Sukkot Preparations

In keeping with a well-established Yavneh custom, boys varsity basketball players helped with construction of the family sukkah at the Schultz-Romaners this past Sunday.

Note: Despite the damage from last week's storms, our campus sukkah is fully restored. Special thanks to Gary Livingston and the facilities crew for their help! |

Clinic Health News
Dear Parents:
In light of the recent diagnosis of the Ebola virus in Dallas, please know there is currently no reason to believe that the situation presents a health concern to Schultz Rosenberg students or staff members.

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of school policies and protocols that are always in place to assist in keeping students healthy and safe and to help prevent the spread of illness within our schools. Please be reminded of the following: - We will isolate students who have symptoms of illness and call parents immediately for them to be picked up.
- If a student has fever, they must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school (this means without the use of fever reducing medication).
- If a student has diarrhea, they must be diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school (this means without the use of diarrhea suppressing medication). Diarrhea is 3 or more episodes of loose stools in a 24 hour period.
- A student must not come to school if vomiting 2 or more times in 24 hours. A student should have 1 or 2 meals without vomiting before returning to school.
In addition, our custodial department has strict guidelines for the cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms. We will update you of any changes and continue to monitor Dallas County health alerts. Be well, Susan Donnenfield,RN,BSN,BA |

Update on Israel from the Israel Advocacy Club
Currently in Israel, Hezbollah planted and detonated two bombs in the Har Dov region along the Lebanese-Israeli Border. This occurred on Tuesday when Hezbollah planted and detonated the bomb, killing two IDF soldiers. The IDF responded by firing at two Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. It is suspected that this occurrence is in response to Israel's attempt at infiltration from Lebanon in the same region. The IDF states, "We see this incident as a gross and violent violation of Israeli sovereignty and see the Lebanese government and Hezbollah responsible for any attempt to harm Israeli soldiers or civilians." Surprisingly, after the statement Hezbollah officially took responsibility for the border bombings. Israel then prompted to make changes for their defense against Hezbollah. This is because the Army has noticed an increase in Hezbollah on the Israeli border including open arms and uniformed operatives.(Source: Jerusalem Post)
