From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
This past week leading up to Rosh Hashanah has been a terrific time to celebrate the diverse talents and generosity of our Yavneh community.
On Wednesday evening, we opened our campus for Meet the Teacher Night, where our parents had the opportunity to see Yavneh through the eyes of our students. The most popular comments I heard in the hallway were "I wish that I could take this class and learn from this teacher," and "If my high school had been more like this, I would have much better memories." Several families took the time to send follow up notes of thanks, and we are so appreciative of all of our parents' support in the education of their most precious children.
And on Thursday, we marked Yavneh's participation in North Texas Giving Day. Joining together with the greater community, we raised over $22,000 from 70 individual donors - many of them first-time givers - providing an excellent jump-start to our Annual Campaign.
Our students have accomplished a great deal in their opening weeks at Yavneh, and we look forward to welcoming the New Year of 5775 with all of you. We are deeply grateful for your trust and support.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Yavneh, I wish you
Shana Tova U Metuka (A Good and Sweet New Year), and Shabbat Shalom - Go Bulldogs!
--Dr. P

Yavneh welcomed two special visitors from the Legacy Senior Communities following Friday morning services. Rivae Balkin-Kliman and Bob Weinfeld spoke to the students about volunteer opportunities at Legacy, and about the importance of community service in general. Ms. Balkin - Kliman serves as Director of Volunteer Services for Legacy and offered opportunities for our students to visit Legacy.
Mr. Weinfeld, grandfather of Yavneh alumna Emily Ackerman '08 and Brennen Bliss '18 shared his personal story of moving to Dallas fifty years ago from Jacksonville, Florida and his lifetime of volunteer service. He told the students that his volunteer work was the most meaningful of his life. He also shared the following advice: "I waited until I was 38 years old - which was 50 years ago, so now you know my age - before getting involved in the community. You shouldn't wait that long." From standing up to show kavod (respect) for our visitors, to their warm applause at the end of their presentation, Yavneh students were inspired by the example of our Legacy community partners, and in true Yavneh fashion, will be engaged in a great deal of volunteer activity in the coming year.

The Yavneh Impact
Adam Schor '14

Yavneh Alumnus Adam Schor '14, a freshman at the University of Texas, won the UT Austin Scholarship Shootout- a half-court basketball shot contest - during his first week of college at UT Plaza. His winning shot was part of an event to benefit the UT Student Emergency Fund, which helps students in emergencies or financial straits due to loss of income from tragic or catastrophic events. The Scholarship Shootout grants a $2000 scholarship to one male and one female student winner.
While Adam attended Yavneh Academy for his junior and senior years of high school, he made a positive and lasting impact on the school and its students, faculty and parents. Together with a talented group of teammates, he led the Boys Varsity Basketball Team to its best record ever in 2013-14, and was a standout in the classroom as well. According to Dr. Portnoy, "Adam was a true triple-threat presence at Yavneh: an excellent student, an outstanding athlete, and a committed community volunteer. I am sure he will succeed grandly at UT, and we look forward to hearing of more accomplishments in the future."
Adam's impact as a student-athlete and all-around contributor was noted by Athletic Director David Zimmerman, who coached Adam for two years with the Varsity Boys Bulldog program: "Adam was always a mensch both on and off the court. His commitment, work ethic, and above all his loyalty to his school, made him a pleasure to coach and be around. He is a shining example of how Yavneh produces the very best."
Congratulations, Adam ... and Hook 'Em Horns!
