From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
It's been a great first week of school!!
Our athletic teams have been practicing all month; student leaders have been planning activities for weeks; and this past Tuesday evening it all came together.
While new parents were meeting with our administrative leadership team in the Beit Midrash, our new students were "buddied" by experienced upperclassmen in the traditions and hallowed ways of Yavneh. Our all-school Welcome Picnic was delicious and well attended, and our students now have several days under their collective belts. They are engaged in Judaic and General Studies courses, daily tfilot (prayers), and a wide range of co-curricular clubs and other activities. We are particularly thrilled to welcome our new students (see below), and want to remind everyone to focus on the health of all our students (sleep, exercise, eating) as we transition to early mornings, long school days, and homework demands. In a word, it's time to "shift gears" and stay healthy. It's going to be a great year!
Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!
--Dr. P

Welcome to Yavneh!
We are thrilled to welcome 30 new students, including a new crop of 10th and 11th graders, to Yavneh this week! Our incoming 9th grade class is diverse, arriving at Yavneh from a number of different schools (private and public) and shuls. They are a talented group of scholars, athletes, dancers, actors, and writers with an App Developer and a Chess Master among them.
A friendly bunch, they have already established a nice rapport with each other. At the end of the 2013-14 school year, incoming 9th graders were welcomed to Yavneh by rising 10th and 11th grade students with icebreakers, pizza, and ice cream at the Schultz Romaner home (see photo below). We look forward to a wonderful journey ahead with all of the new students!

Yavneh Family Reunion in Italy
The Epstein and Bell families gathered in
Venice, Italy for a festive dinner when Zach Epstein '17 and Pierce Bell '18 realized that their two families would be in the same Italian city on the same day. Pierce is a new freshman, coming to us from Episcopal School of Dallas, who traveled with his folks, Tracy Graivier Bell and Jay Bell, and sister Zoe Bell. Zach was joined by his parents, Dia and Barry (celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary) and siblings
Daley '10, Jori '12 and Jason '14. It was a truly historic Yavneh Reunion!

MEETING FOR SENIOR PARENTS
Seniors are well on their way to planning their lives after high school. The senior year is a time to apply for various post-secondary opportunities. Senior parents are invited to a parent meeting on Monday, August 25 at 7:00 P.M. in the library. You will come away understanding the step-by-step application process in detail. How do you send SAT/ACT scores? What is the CSS Profile? Seniors will be guided through Senior Seminar every Tuesday and Thursday during tenth period but are also welcome to attend. All questions will be answered so that each of you feel you are ready for the exciting days ahead.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, seniors will meet in the library to discuss topics of concern. Topics will range from the application process, financial aid, essay writing and life beyond high school. How do you get a dorm? What happens if you want to defer a year? The first few weeks will detail important and updated information about the Common Application, standardized testing, and a look into the lives of four seniors in a movie called "500 WORDS OR LESS." In addition to the class, seniors and their parents can set up an appointment at any time to meet with the college counselor.
There are many college nights within the metroplex. Choose the one most convenient to you and go!

COLLEGE REPS AT YAVNEH
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Representatives from various college admissions offices will be on campus to discuss the college experience with you. Posters will be placed on the counselor bulletin board announcing the dates and times. Unless otherwise indicated, the reps will meet in the office conference room. You will need to pick up a College Visit Permission Form at least one day prior to the meeting which must be signed by your teacher. Then, you will need to bring the form to the office conference room. You will also need to sign in at the information session that you were in attendance. The permission slip must be signed by your teacher in order to attend the information session. Please consider carefully whether you wish to attend the seminar. This service is to provide you with valuable information. If you are NOT interested in a particular college, please remain in your classroom. Permission slips can be picked up at LuAnn's desk or in Mrs. Schmucker's office.
The below are colleges and universities that have set up time to visit Yavneh at the time of printing. Please look at the bulletin boards as there will be more schools visiting. These schools have registered as of August 13.
