From the Head of School ~
Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year!
In my more than thirty years as an educator, I cannot remember a more difficult summer for World Jewry.
From the violence
in Israel to anti-Semitic activities in Europe and around the world, it is truly a challenging time for our extended community. To me, that makes a Yavneh education all the more important for our teens, as we provide an extraordinary opportunity for them to develop strong Jewish identities together with a rigorous curriculum in General and Judaic Studies, preparing them for lives of service and excellence in college and beyond.
Our faculty and staff have been hard at work over the summer months to ensure a smooth and productive start to our new academic year. Our athletes have been practicing, and we are hearing wonderful reports from our students about their experiences at camp, Israel and elsewhere.
Welcome to our weekly E-newsletter, which we call the "E-tone," which is also the Hebrew word for newspaper. Every Friday afternoon, you'll be receiving a copy of the E-tone, including highlights of the week, important upcoming dates, Divrei Torah, college updates and much, much more!
As we prepare to welcome our returning families, as well as a number of new ones - including a whole new freshman class - we are filled with excitement and anticipation of terrific things this year. I hope to see you Tuesday evening at our new parent meeting and all-school welcome celebration. (P.S. There's still time to finish summer reading.... ;o)
It's going to be a great year!
Shabbat Shalom, and Go Bulldogs!
--Dr. P

ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS
Katie Frink, Admissions Director at Rhodes College will conduct a workshop for seniors on Tuesday, August 19 at 1:30 P.M in the Yavneh library. This information session will allow you, the applicant to hear about essay writing from the college admissions point of view. A question and answer period will immediately follow. We are so fortunate to have her on campus and know this will provide you with a different perspective as you work on your college essay.
MEETING FOR SENIOR PARENTS
Seniors are well on their way to planning their lives after high school. The senior year is a time to apply for various post-secondary opportunities. Senior parents are invited to a parent meeting on Monday, August 25 at 7:00 P.M. in the library. You will come away understanding the step-by-step application process in detail. How do you send SAT/ACT scores? What is the CSS Profile? Seniors will be guided through Senior Seminar every Tuesday and Thursday during tenth period but are also welcome to attend. All questions will be answered so that each of you feel you are ready for the exciting days ahead.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, seniors will meet in the library to discuss topics of concern. Topics will range from the application process, financial aid, essay writing and life beyond high school. How do you get a dorm? What happens if you want to defer a year? The first few weeks will detail important and updated information about the Common Application, standardized testing, and a look into the lives of four seniors in a movie called "500 WORDS OR LESS." In addition to the class, seniors and their parents can set up an appointment at any time to meet with the college counselor.
There are many college nights within the metroplex. Choose the one most convenient to you and go!

COLLEGE REPS AT YAVNEH
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Representatives from various college admissions offices will be on campus to discuss the college experience with you. Posters will be placed on the counselor bulletin board announcing the dates and times. Unless otherwise indicated, the reps will meet in the office conference room. You will need to pick up a College Visit Permission Form at least one day prior to the meeting which must be signed by your teacher. Then, you will need to bring the form to the office conference room. You will also need to sign in at the information session that you were in attendance. The permission slip must be signed by your teacher in order to attend the information session. Please consider carefully whether you wish to attend the seminar. This service is to provide you with valuable information. If you are NOT interested in a particular college, please remain in your classroom. Permission slips can be picked up at LuAnn's desk or in Mrs. Schmucker's office.
The below are colleges and universities that have set up time to visit Yavneh at the time of printing. Please look at the bulletin boards as there will be more schools visiting. These schools have registered as of August 13.
